Help: Winding Crown comes out when unscrewed.

on my vintage Rolex Oyster Model#6426

I went to wind it up and set the time.

Unscrewed the crown and wound it, then pulled it out a bit more to set the hands.. and the whole shaft came out.. still attached to the crown!!

I put it back in and screwed it back up.

Can it be easily fixed..

What sort of cost to get this repaired.. dare I ask??

TIA

It could be as simple as opening it up and tightening the screw that keeps the stem from coming out.

Or that screw may have failed due to corrosion inside.

All depends on when you last had it serviced or if water resistance has failed at the gaskets surrounding that stem.

Best to let a professional help you. Could be $50 - $1,000 depending upon what caused it.

had someone quote who says it would be fixed when it's serviced/cleaned at the same time.

£495!!

this is an authorised Rolex agent.. using rolex parts.

Not Rolex service centre who start at £595 then seem to list everything else they want to replace on t at costs!

Same happened on my 16713. Watchmaker took it apart and added some lock tite to crown tube. Took him 20 minutes. It was under warranty so cost me $0.

Loctite threadlocker is used to keep these the stem and crown tied together. High strength.

It depends. If the screw simply loosened you might not need a service. If it came all the way out I would definitely have it examined.

Not a full service unless it is truly out of service. The winding stem needs to be removed cleaned then thread-locker applied to hold the steam and crown together. The stem is inserted, secured, and tested. It is a service but not a complete movement overhaul.

Why would it be a replica? Old movements use a screw for that system and this sometimes comes loose.

This is actually a fairly common problem. Sometimes the set lever is worn or broken--this is a vintage piece after all.

But let's assume it's just that the set lever screw is loose. i think this is a good way to "test" your friendly neighborhood watchmaker. If he takes it behind a curtain, seems bothered to talk to you and gives vague answers to your questions, and insists on doing a full service for $800 or whatever...then i'd advise going elsewhere. Because it will should only take him about five minutes to figure out what's going on and fix it for you. And he can still recommend a full service if he feels it's necessary!
