The Milgauss is definitely an aquired taste but at 700. more than a Submariner I'd hardly call it as entry level. I'm on my second one, a Zblue and it's a keeper.

I never liked the lightning bolt second hand...thought it cheapened the look, IMO (for those that have/love the watch, no malice intended). To me, it's a datejust with a bad looking second hand.

unpopular, popular who cares. All Rolex share the same DNA and have their own special qualities. If I had unlimited funds I would want one in my collection for sure...

because its for engineer/scientist types, and they are nerds
people prefer to pretend they are pilots, explorers, and deep sea divers

I found it very contradictory that the reviewer talked about how it could be 'objectively' the worst watch (and added his own cute little twist at the end). He even went as far as to define 'Objectivity' vs. 'Subjectivity' and contrast why the Milgauss has 'objectively' bad elements - such as the lightning bolt seconds hand or the green crystal. Those aren't objectively bad or questionable items at all...it's subjective. You know what I felt like at the end of it? I felt like he was trying to do a Top Gear UK, or Grand Tour review where they talk about how wrong a car is for 5 minutes and then at the end say something like, "...but it's an Alfa, it's supposed to be bonkers. And that's why I love it." -except it was nowhere near as interesting or funny as Clarkson, Hammond or May |

I've always liked the Milgauss, but I have also always thought this as well.
If it's a scientists watch, why not have some other more scientific complication on it? When I was a scientist in a former life, I'd always log the date and time of an experiment I conducted - why not add an annual calendar or something? |

I’m a Milgauss fan, and the fact that it’s allegedly unpopular only adds to the appeal for me.

Most people keep their real feelings to themself when it comes to the Milgauss but I really feel the need to be honest and say it just sucks monkeyballs.

It was my first. I enjoyed it for 7 years and now my friend is the proud owner. I liked it and nothing wrong with it per se. I just kind of grew out of it; of course original intention was to keep it forever as my first nice watch but that didn’t happen and I used it to fund something else.

I'm not sure if it is the case that the Milgauss is unpopular so much as it is that Rolex offers so many pieces that are more attractive or than the rather niche purpose-designed Milgauss. I find the colors very attractive, the blue dial model even more so, however I'd be more inclined to buy a Submariner or Day Date before I'd swing for a Milgauss, cost not withstanding.
It doesn't quite have that iconic ubiquity definitive of every other Rolex. I've always thought of it as the Maverick to the Mustang and Falcon of Rolex's offerings. |

I had a black non gv and now a Zblue. I love the look. Had to have that marina blue with tinted glass. How do we know it's unpopular ?

Why is the Milgauss so unpopular?
I like the blue dial Milgaus a lot. I think it’s beautiful. I’d love to have one. However, there are a lot of watches I like a lot, and that’s where the issue is. There is a big difference between watches I like a lot and watches that I’ll actually buy.
Seriously, did you ever see a watch that you really like a lot, but think to yourself, I’m not buying it, but I like it a lot? That’s what the Milgaus is for me. Same thing goes for the Breitling Navitimer. I really love those, but I’ll probably never get one. There are just other watches I want more than those. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Milgauss has always had a popularity deficit, probably because it is polarizing. You can love it or hate it.... but very few are indifferent. The orange lightning bolt seconds hand, and the orange details on the dial, are very love-hate. The watch is a bit thicker and wears heavier than the otherwise very similar (and very popular) 39mm EXP1 / Oyster Perpetuals. And the polished center links on the bracelet are also very love-hate. Lastly, and important not to forget, is that the Milgauss is expensive. Brand new, it is priced higher than the No-Date Sub or any comparable OP, EXP, or DJ. This gives the Milgauss a reputation for being a weird, unloved, poor value, Rolex. It tends to be a watch that's hard to "get".
However, I really dig mine. In particular, I love love love that seconds hand. The clean, stark, symmetry of its no-date dial. The orange details are fun and energetic. The dial is a velvety, deep, perfectly matte charcoal black that soaks up light. To me the Milgauss just brims over with jaunty verve and hearty, eccentric, charisma. It makes me smile. Popularity is overrated. Buy and wear what you like, be happy, and celebrate that variety is the spice of life! |

The Milgauss is among my favorites. I once had 3 of them, currently keep the white dial and Z-blue.

My GV was the watch that I received the absolute most compliments on, Daytona and DD included.

As of my understanding Milgauss has always been too colourful in order to be popular. As some one said it above it is too polarizing.
May be bacasue of that I personally like it so much. Bought my first one back in 2008 - GV one. I am very fond of the green crystal and the thunderbolt! I hope as well one day many people will appreciate the fact that Milgauss GV is the only Rolex (and maybe a wrist watch) having a green crystal. Then it would be a hype for it! I also believe, that most likely Rolex either in 2019 or 2020 will discontinue the current one. Whether there will be a new one ... well we shall see it! |
