New Member, intro and question about 118239 over 118238
Hello All,
New member here. Never been a big fan of forums, but I must say I really do enjoy reading posts here and I'm learning quite a bit. I've been a long-time Rolex owner. Started with a 16710, which I regret selling to this day. Transitioned to a date-just and now I'm wearing a DSSD. I'm turning 45 soon and it's now time to add a day-date to my collection. I've read other threads about the debate over YG v. WG versions. I prefer the 118239 WG as it is more subtle and understated in my opinion. My question is not about preferences about the appearance as I see there's quite a disparity. My question is more about if there any quality differences. You can try on a 118238 at pretty much any dealer, but I've never worn a 118239. Perhaps I can get some help from members about the following: 1. any difference in weight vs. the YG version? 2. does WG look similar to SS or is there a subtle difference? 3. are the WG bracelets more prone to link stretch (read that somewhere)? Any other info is much appreciated. |

No difference between the models other than metal color. I have handled and tried on both. Yes WG looks like SS, there is a subtle difference but it is very subtle IMO. That wouldn't dissuade me from buying WG though. Good luck

There was a reddit post in the rolex sub yesterday where the individual bought a new pepsi and a WG DJ. It shows the clear visual difference between SS and WG. Once I saw that, I think I would be able to tell them apart regularly.

My answer to 2. Rolex White gold is much warmer in the color and more White/yellowish then the SS. If you compare a SS and WG next to each other it is easy to see the difference. Even wean looking at a Rolex WG close without any comparison I can tell the difference easily. But from a distance, it is very hard for me to tell them apart or with just a glance.
I prefer white gold over yellow gold. It is more subtle and understated as you said. It got that stealth wealth look, just like platinum too. Those who do not know Rolex or WG will think it is SS, anyone with knowledge about Rolex will know it is WG just because it is a DD.

As you said a matter of personal preference, but would pick WG over YG everytime. As said by others WG has a slight yellowish color which makes it easy to tell from a ss watch when comparing them side by side, but to a non WIS a WG will just be another SS watch.
Check this picture of a SS bracelet clasp in between 2 WG bracelet clasps: Love my 18239; we have a spot open for you on the WG DD club! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Great pic. You really can see the difference. Now I know when others describe the WG as "milkier" looking than steel.

This pic may help with visual differences in the white metals.
Left to right: Platinum, WG, WG and Stainless

Amazing collection!! The platinum has a much sharper sheen to it. Very noticeable.
