Finally started forging things!

Thought I would update everyone on my journey blacksmithing.

I finally got everything together and started small, making bottle openers.

I currently have a 333, and 190 pound anvil. My forge operates off of propane, getting up to forge welding temperatures.

I have made three bottle openers so far, really good fun!

All three bottle openers are made from rebar.

Hope you enjoy all of the pictures!

Glad you’re rediscovering an art that passed us by generations ago.

The ring of hammer welding on anvil is music - especially on a cool Sunday morning around 7am...I’m sure the neighbors love it too.

Does the other end lift pop-top cans?

Very cool. Have a friend that does some knife making and really enjoys it. Trying to get him into kitchen knife making. Huge money in good kitchen steel.

Awesome that your starting point is Rebar !!

What is the purpose of two different weight anvils - wouldn’t just the heaviest suffice or do you need each for different techniques?

Thanks for all the kind replies! I am absolutely loving it so far. I was really needing a creative outlet that got me out and working. I have found it be incredibly rewarding, seeing something go from nothing to a useful object.

I am very green and have a lifetime to learn, the journey is most of the fun after all!

I will make sure to update the thread as I progress, will be a cool time capsule I think.

The different weights are because I got anxious and bought my first one quickly. After having both though, it's nice to use the "lighter" 190lb anvil for smaller stuff. It's easier to move and has more horn to work with, also the narrower face is a great way to judge smaller hook lengths.

Once I get my shed shop built, the big boy will be my primary.

Another thing is the smaller anvil will heat up quicker and not steal as much heat from your work.

Very cool - hadn’t considered heat transfer away from the object being worked on, but of course makes perfect sense.

Looking forward to seeing some future projects !

So I finished up my newest one. I must admit, I don't like it all that much, but that is what practice is for!
