This is a great story !! Wonderful AD and marvelous watch. It was yours all along you sound like a very deserving person and I am quite sure that the AD salesperson noticed this as well.

Yeah, I kinda agree. At least he was able to score a watch that wasn't even on his list!

Congrats, OP. Hope you enjoy it.

Jon congrats on the 126660! It's an amazing reference to pick up.

I have to ask why did you buy it if it wasn't on your list?

“ She said ok, give me your license, I’ll go check your account to make sure it’s in good standing...”

WTH?

Check your account? Good standing? Meaning confirm you’ve purchased there before / what you purchased / did you owe them money?

I’m glad you’re happy with your watch (hopefully you won’t wear it with a suit) but to me, if felt as if the AD was performing a proctology exam...and you passed, so you were able to buy a watch.

congrats! i ran into the same thing on black Friday. Just walked into my AD and they had one in stock as well!! couldn't believe it, but i wasn't in the market for that particular model. So i didn't buy it. Had second thoughts about not getting it, but the watch was just a little too "hefty" in weight for me, so im holding out for the BLRO instead. This same dealer was able to get me a BLNR back in Sept, so ill hold out.

The same happened to me as well. They had the watch in stock, but it was bundled with another watch of equal value. In fact, you can't buy any professional models from that AD without bundling them. Waiting list or not.

Great story, especially the part about it buying your birthday!

I had a similar experience with acquiring my new DSSD Black, I only went in to order some replacement spring bars for a Tudor Black Bay....casually mentioned that I was interested in the Deep Sea, in addition to the GMT that I was on the waiting list for.

It just so happens that one had arrived that morning, and I know this to be true! Next minute it was on my wrist but I had to make up my mind fast as it was the first 126660 they had received and there were others who would have taken it instantly had I said no.

Right time, right place, pure luck.

It's nice that you were deemed worthy . Just kidn' couldn't resist. Funny though last year my AD thanked me for buying a SubC at a discount. This year l thanked him for taking my 9k so l could have a Blnr. Anyway we all know what's going on.
Congrats! to you on your DSSD and I'm sure that helped in making your birthday extra special....Enjoy.

Welcome to the club. I feel you did the right thing by buying the watch even though it wasn’t “on your list”. You’re going to love it.

Sorry the AD experience was so cruddy with the ID /"good standing"/need permission to sell to you garbage, glad you got a watch you wanted though -- all's well that ends well.

Great piece if you like the size, for sure.

Yea exactly, how come we're getting zero response in regards to the "take your license" like what does that even mean? Since when do dealers need your ID besides them wanting to check when paying with a CC??

So when the went back to check your "standing", what did they see. What else have you bought over the years?

This is a very different story if you had no purchase history and they just confirmed you didn't owe them money vs you buying a hundred thousand dollars in high end, high margin jewelry and watches.

You are outraged that not everyone is outraged? That's outrageous!

It's hardly new news that purchase history matters...are they just supposed to take my word for how much overpriced stuff I bought this year?

I told her I was an account holder and I think she just wanted to pull up my card info and purchase history. I have purchased about $10k to $15k worth of jewelry from them. Not a ton of money spent, but enough to get approval for the purchase.

Also, to answer another persons question about why I purchased this watch when it wasn’t originally on my list. I took a leap of faith and put 20% down on the watch, enough to get it to the store to try it on. Once I tried it on, I loved it. Yes it felt a little big on my wrist at first, but after wearing it for a day or so my wrist got used to it and it’s quite comfortable. I’m glad I bought the watch and it’s quickly becoming my favorite piece.

Also want to point out that I was just in Vegas. Stayed at the Cosmopolitan and I ended seeing more Deep Sea’s (black face) than any other Rolex. I saw 3 DSSD, 1 Daytona, 2 Subs, 1 GMT, 1 Datejust, and 1 Oyster Prepetual. I don’t know if it was just random or if Deep Sea’s are becoming more popular.

Anyways, here’s another shot from today.

I’m with you 100%. I have zero tolerance for these shenanigans.
Maybe they googled your address to see if you were a player or not?
I don’t think I’d be quick to play the license game unless we were going for a test drive or something.

It's hard to believe it's come to this. When I bought my first Sub 16610, I saw it in the window (they had two), walked in, negotiated a discount, paid and left. No inquisition, no big fuss.

So when I went in I was met by the assistant manager of the store. Now I had just come from a customer meeting and I was all suited up, looking my best. Congrats on the purchase! But, come again? Checking if your account is in good standing? Almost sounds like a mortgage application.
