$20,000; Two vs One

Hello all!

Long time lurker new poster. Thanks for all the info.

Little history, I have continually flipped my watches after a bit of time, upgrading each time along the way. Citizen, Tag, Submariner ND, BLNR, and currently DaytonaC (paid MSRP).

On to the question; with the current climate around this piece and condition, do I “cash out” and realize the gain and upgrade again OR diversify to two pieces (sub and xxx)

I work an office job and am very easy on wear.

This is where my head is and look forward to opinion and others personal experience!

Upgrade to AP Royal Oak

Or

Sub ND and maybe a dressier piece

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

It’s all a matter of personal preference - as is the perspective of an ‘upgrade’ —

My recommendation is to take a step back - enjoy the Daytona - and add what you want later.

If you do decide to flip the 116500 — remember — you have the golden ticket - for a trade - if you will. Once you cash it in. It’s gone - as are those kinds of deals. Trade smartly.

Don’t get caught up in all the hype.

I’m a big AP fan BTW — and the 15202 is the way to go.

Just my .02

I think the black dial Daytona is versatile enough for a one and only but the lack of a date function wouldn’t work for me as a daily. A DJ 41 and a sub is a great combo if you want to stay Rolex. Or grab a JLC and Sub if you want a more traditional office watch. Personally I would just keep the Daytona and save for another piece though.

I appreciate the feedback thus far!

I’ve always had an affinity for AP, and if I can get a RO for (effectively $12,400) it’s worth considering (to me).

Try them all on when you have the Daytona with you and you’ll know the answer. Maybe you’ll decide to keep it. Maybe you’ll flip for something else. Maybe you’ll sell and hold out till mkt drops and get 3 pieces.

You already own one of the best SS references; are you saying you don’t like it? Just curious ...

I like it, as I’ve enjoyed all of my previous Rolex models, and would own each of them again if possible, but I do not regret swapping them for the next one.

If you have had an affinity for AP I think you should sell the Daytona and put the proceeds toward the RO you want. Otherwise it will always be on your mind. Worst case you move on from it but you’re better off knowing.

Well...can't help you. In all your post, I couldn't find anything abut what watch you like and want to wear.

Wait, maybe I can. Why don't you pick the watch you like and want to wear?

I suppose we could play forget about the $ and pick what you like, but if we did that I would have a 5711 or 5712 and be done with it

I like them all, however, picking a Daytona or RO as a one and only is my struggle or option two (from above).

I have a story that might help you. My AD wears a Patek 5711 blue dial. The one that sells for over 50k. One day I went in to buy a watch and we got to talking....I ask him if he would ever sell the 5711. And he said "Yes, but what would I buy when I sold it.

The point of my story is that you are getting to a point that you own the best both in appreciation and desirability, I think you should hold it.

Which AP ref are you looking at?

I haven’t taken my 15450 off since I got, looks amazing and super comfortable

I’d stop there too!

But, if he’s at a AD, he could sell for $50k, and buy two at MSRP, haha

I think you should keeping flipping forever. Just think, you could have a new, exciting watch every two years or so. Some years you might trade up and some years you might have to pony up some cash. Keep the churn going.

I would wait until you hit another homer like an LV or sky at msrp and THEN move the Daytona. Trading into the AP u will lose sum of ur gains when u trade it in

If upgrading is your thing and you're not feeling the Daytona then I think you should get what you want. If you just want to flip to flip then I'd be very wary.

If I owned a white Daytona C it would be almost impossible for me to flip it for the gain and get two pieces.

Currently I own a subc LN, LV and a BLNR. All of which Are worth way more in this climate as to when I bought them. Couple weeks back I was asking a similar question; should I sell all three and get a gold Daytona. Just couldn’t bring myself to do it

Then I would totally do it. The premium on those is 2k or less which is pretty much msrp+tax so you effectively traded up to an AP RO. Can’t go wrong with the 15450, the proportions are great, super comfortable, and the display back you get is amazing.
