Need advice for first Rolex purchase

Hello.

I am new to the forum.

I just finished graduate school, and will be getting my first big boy check in November. I will be purchasing a "new" to me Rolex.

The watch is a 1980s Rolex Perpetual Datejust Jubilee bracelet. The owner purchased it from the original owner in the 1980s. No box or paperwork. The watch is only being sold as he recently upgraded. He is an older (70s) coin dealer with a solid reputation. The watch was recently serviced by Rolex. The asking price is $1350.

What are some thinks I need to consider in purchasing the watch safely, without risking to much financially.

The owner is agreeable to meeting at a dealer to authenticate. What is a reasonable fee to pay for this service by Rolex dealer?

Thanks,

Daniel

Do you have any photos of the watch, and preferably the movement, too?

Sounds like you are just looking at buying a "Rolex" for the sake of having one.

Why not take a little more time...research the different models and latch on to one that you really feel drawn to Vs. simply trying to buy one you can afford (now) and going through all the authenticating business?

Excellent advice! Shop around and try them all on. There may be another model that catches your attention. The hunt for that one watch is half of the fun.

I agree.

But I have been a window shopper for a while. My now watch is a seiko monster dive watch that I bought 5 years ago at completion of my officer basic training for US Army. I love the size and weight, and the watch has been around the world and to Afghanistan.

I just finished graduate school, age 30, with 0 debt thanks to Uncle Sam. So I won't be taking on debt to acquire the watch.

I fancy the larger submariner, but I stumbled across the datejust at a recent coin show ( I collect us silver/gold). The two tone datejust I feel is a nice dress watch without being to flashy.

I imagine this will be the first of a few.

I would pass on that watch. Save a little more money and search for a Rolex in better condition.

You can only have One first Rolex! Best of Luck in your search!

That watch looks like it's in desperate need of a complete restoration, however, looks legitimate to me.

Do you have service history? the bracelet needs work and if it also needs an overhaul at the RSC it will be another $2000 for the watch next to the $1350..

The model/size fits your wrist well, but I would rather save money and get one in better order (a bit later) then this.

You could come back to the shop every day for a few days, wind it, measure it and come back wind it again and measure it again (see if it runs decently enough). But still... the bracelet.

Whe you say recent, you must mean like in the year 1988?

I'm confused, it doesn't look recent...?

good thoughts.

wife and i were at the mall the other day, stopped by the AD. tried a few on…

really liked the TT sub (bluesy) vs TT yachtmaster (blue face, gold bezel).

wife said ok. but I am taking it slow.

Okay, you are taking it slow, and seems like you prefer a TT (the Datejust, the bluesy and the YM).. what budget are you looking at taking it slow?
Finding a TT for around $1350 in good condition will of course be hard to impossible, I guess the watch i question is "worth" it. But I would skip on it.

You are looking for help, so let us help you. What is your budget and what are your 'requirements' ?

budget would be 5,000 to 7,500.

like the idea of BNIB from a AD, but if I can get a reputable second hand piece and let someone else take the depreciation hit.. that would be ok.

Then hanging out here in the Rolex sales section would be a good idea. I scoured the listings for about 10 weeks before coming up with the watch I wanted. Saved 20+ percent vs MSRP.

Okay, 5000-7500, BNIB or preowned.

You want (mostly) sports or (mostly) dressy.

You want Rolex or also open to other awesome brands?

You want gold, TT or steel?

You want color (blue / red / yellow) or more classic (silver/gold/white/black)

You seem to have small wrists (what size circumference?) about 6.5" I think? What size dial you prefer? 36mm 39-40mm 42mm or larger?

You tried a TT YM and TT Sub (both 40mm) did they sing to you? what could be better?

Good luck, enjoy the voyage and the quest for your perfect watch! :)

I would disagree with what most are saying. Price seems reasonable and you could always throw it on a brown croc strap as well if the bracelet is too far gone for now. I think it seems like a very reasonable first but that won't break the bank, and you can upgrade later.

For now buy an after market two tone bracelet put your original clasp on it and for around $1300 you have an authentic Rolex that people will see and think you paid $6000 for. You'll be a Rolex owner for minimal cash, and in the meantime you can save for a newer one.

I think the best advice imo is that a watch /rolex is a very personal buying decision.

Imo the best advice is to visit AD shops..try on all models which appeal to you..read the watch review sections for the models you like..spend time in the sale section on trf..then go back to AD dealers for a final hands on filter...hopefully by then you know which model you like and maybe you may end up with the model you first posted about..if not...then you probably will have found what you are looking for...good luck with your decision and enjoy the process...girls buy piurses and well we all know what guys buy ( we all signed up for account on a rolex forum......)

That bracelet is pretty stretched out. If everything is original, that price is quite good, and I would suggest a new bracelet (the bracelet doesn't necessarily have to be "new.")

Pass

The bracelet is quite stretched. The gap between the hollow end links and the case are quite noticeable.

This model - while a "classic" would be a bit more appropriate on a Sr gentleman.

Again, IMO you are focused on getting a Rolex you can afford...with that goal in mind you will end up with a beat up, polished up watch.

Patience.

congrats on graduating.

there's more potentially wrong with that one than good so i'd wait for your 12th payday and get a better one for about $500 - $750 more. better yet, buy a near new one. your first only comes once.
