Forum,

I have been collecting for quite some time and was recently struck by the GS curse. I just added a Snowflake to the collection and am absolutely blown away by the quality of the piece. Textured dial, smooth sweeping hand, razor sharp polishing on the hands and applied indicies. I am now falling in love with many of the pieces (the high beat GMT Peacock, the cream dial GMT SBGM221, the high beat texture blue dial SBGH267,...). Am I the only one with GS model numbers running through my head? What are some of the favorites on here?

Has anyone else had this realization? I am struggling a bit to not want to unload a number of Swiss pieces! I am currently at a 3 watch rotation with a Speedmaster, Submariner, and Snowflake. Wish me luck in keeping it this small

Anyone with an eye for fine craftsmanship and finishing would be hard pressed to put any watch against a grand Seiko dollar for dollar. If we are talking major brands I think you need to spend upwards to 20k to get the dial work even close.

The only reason I don’t own a bunch of grand Seikos is I’m a sucker for iconic designs and sports watches. While some GS designs may be iconic in the east, I didn’t grow up eyeing them in the mall jewelry store case.

I sincerely hope some day GS offers a finely finished diver in a 40mm case with an automatic.

I know what you mean. The sheer quality and value of them and Seiko in general have made me question buying other brands. I find myself going to the Snowflake when I want something more refined and the Seiko Divers when something casual so much so my other watches haven't been worn in awhile. I have been looking to add the GS diver and nearly pulled the trigger... Maybe at Christmas

The bracelet is just so boring (problem with almost all except the RO, Nautilus, overseas, daydate, jubilee bracelet).

I'm sure more and more people are realizing what a great brand GS is it gets more exposure on the major watch sites and Youtube channels. Both Grand Seiko and King Seiko were giving the higher-end Swiss brands a good run for their money in the late 60s - early 70s, too, and it's a sad irony that both brands fell victim to the Seiko-driven quartz revolution.

I can’t get enough either. I have the Peacock and it never fails to excite me when I put it on.

I might get a snowflake if I happen upon it. But the current one I want is this.

I'm also thinking of my next piece!

I just got a SBGR061 (post pics later) and I'm blown away by the finishing of this thing. The case is shining like nothing I've seen in steel, the polishing of the applied batons and hands is unreal.

The one big complaint I have is that GS are so thick, mine is 13,1mm and all the other automatics I've liked are something like 14mm which is just too much. There are some manual wind and spring drive models that are 11-12.5mm I believe.

The second smaller complaint I have is that the movement does not seem to be finished to such a high standard and I'm not sure it deserves a display case back.

Wish they come out with thinner versions as they realise the international market preferences.

The Grand Seiko 9F quartz models are thinner, and just as well finished as the others. I think mine is 9.9mm. The 9F movements look so good they sometimes have clear casebacks on Limited Edition models.

Might have to take a look at the quartz too. Have a Swedish air force issued Seiko pilot watch so not totally against Quartz although I'd really like a Spring drive version in the dimensions you mention. The day date function is a plus.

What reference do you have? Seems to be a higher level than the SBGX061. Nothing matches your configuration with day/date and 5-piece bracelet in current line-up.

Mine is SBGT235, bought in Japan, where quartz Grand Seikos are said to be more popular than automatics or spring drives, and dozens of quartz GS models are available, as opposed to just a few overseas.

Bandiera Jewellers in Yorkville. Great service, and they had a Snowflake in the back last time I was there. Loved it!

The way the light plays with the GS logo on the dial makes it almost look like the logo is suspended atop the dial instead of applied! Beautiful!
