My 2005 Explorer with the wife's 2018 OP.
Very sleek bezel on that OP.

I'm a fan of the current version but I can see the merits of the previous versions as well.

I vote for the 114270 which is what I have 36mm

My wrist is 7.25inch and the 39mm with new case design made my 40mm EXP2 look small. So, try on a 39mm EXP1 because they do wear large and IMHO look like a 41MM~ size.

The 36mm looks and wears like such. The newer case 36mm look and wear like 37~38mm. My Sinn 556a wears like those new 36mm Oyster cases which again are or appear larger with new wider case.

I will be keeping my 114270 from 2008.

In an ideal world Rolex would make the Exp1 in 36mm using its new case and fully lumed numerals. That is the only way I would move or upgrade to newer Exp1.

The Explorer photographs much larger than it appears in real life. I looked at photographs for months and was completely convinced I wanted the 114270. I was surprised myself when I tried it on.

I love the 214270. It is also very nice buying new with the 5 year warranty.

Funny how we have the same wrist size (mine is flat BTW) and I thought the size of the 114270 was perfect. I also own and wear a classic DJ 36mm and thought the Exp wears very similiarly. Didn’t really notice any size difference at all.

I went with the 39mm. I love it. But if I had had the opportunity to buy the 36mm gently used, I would have bought it instead.

I currently own both and when switch from to the next I wonder why I would want to keep the other one - you would be surprised at how different they are.

Still searching for my explorer 1. Most models seems to be around the £3600-£4000. I feel it’s super inflated but I love the watch. Going to Hatton Garden today, see if I can pick one up at a good price. Thanks for the input guys.

I'm still searching too and can't believe that debate threads like this (there are at least 2 on TRF right now) and pretty much dead-locked. My wrist is also 6-3/4" and probably the perfect size for me would be something right in the middle 37-38 (like my Railmaster LE)...I guess I'll have to try on a 214270 at my local Ben Bridge to really find out.

I was in the same position a few years back, I went for an early 14270 with lug holes and a tritium dial. Absolutely love it and actually enjoy the slightly rattly end links! I think the combination of the 36mm case, tritium dial, lug holes and hollow end links give it an almost vintage feel.

I caught my 114270 today under a cloudless blue summer sky and it stunned me - that white gold and black that draws you in. The flat but raised sapphire. Gorgeous. I love the 36mm and the lume is still highly visible despite the missing 3, 6 ,9. It's the classic case size and now readily available.

ps, I had to check the time again because I was too busy gorking at it the first time.

I'd go with the newer model ... 10yr servicing and a guarantee

What you'll lose in resale (if any) its hardly worth worryinging over if you intend to keep it

I just visited my local Ben Bridge where they had a pre-2016 214270.
I have a 6-3/4" wrist and I found the proportions to be just right.
Lets put it this way: the 39mm is closer to the perfect size (whatever that would be) than the 36 which I feel would be a tad small on me.
That combined with all the other benefits of the new version (the matte dial was wonderful), it's a clear choice for me and I have now narrowed my search to a 214270 mark 2
(Excuse my crappy wrist shots)...it was a quick visit.

I have done sir just to get a rough idea on current prices. I just don’t trust the internet when it comes to buying watches I’m more cash on the spot so I can actually see the condition. I’m still searching. I own a 16613 submariner bicolour blue face but it’s just slightly too chunky for my wrist. It’s nice to wear on occasions but I’m still trying to tone it down a bit with an Explorer 1 that I can wear daily. Hopefully in the next week I have my baby lol. Thanks again guys.

I absolutely agree with this. The 5 yr warranty and the update clasp is worth the extra cost...if your can swing it. The 39mm gives it wrist presence but it’s not too overpowering. It doesnt scream Rolex... it speaks at a conversational tone. I purchased mine in September and haven’t taken off yet. It works with suits or jeans, in my opinion the Explorer 1 214270 Mark 2 is the best overall “bang for buck.”

If it were my I’d spend the extra dough and get the new model. That is unless you prefer the size/fit of the 36mm.

I you really love it I'd say buy a brand new one if it's in your budget. I think the upgrades (love the easylink) and being in your name will make you appreciate it even more especially if you know it will be a keeper. If your wrist is 6 1/2 + the 39mm should work good for you.

The Explorer feels perfect on my wrist. Comfort, weight, quality, versatility, looks, price, gentlemanly wrist presence...it has it all. Go get one!

39mm for me. It’s worth it for the bracelet and EasyLink.

I just can't get over what I consider a major design flaw in the 36mm versions: what's the point of the non-luminous white paint in the center of the number markers? If you're going to add matching white paint to them, why not make them luminous like the rest of the markers and hands?
Also, the accuracy of my 214270 mark 2 is ridiculous. I will have to confirm this, but I'm quite sure it's outperforming some of the quartz timepieces around the house....the 3132 movement is truly a major triumph in the steady evolution of Rolex engineering.
Big vote for the "newer" Explorer...I'm no longer referring to it as the 39mm...so much more than that.
