Can anyone tell me what the buzz was about?

I took my 16610 out of the box this morning and before I got it off the pillow it started to vibrate and buzz for about 2 seconds. It was still running and keeping time. I put 40-50 winds on it and all seems normal. Was it the mainspring? Any thoughts, aside from it needs a service?

It was excited to get wrist time? Seriously, I don't really know. There are many here who know all about watch internals that will be able to answer you.

May have been the rotor spinning if you jolted it as you removed it from the box :) Ive noticed it a few times also.

my uneducated guess is it was the hairspring/balance wheel just starting up

it takes a jolt to get it started and it moves around unregularly for a couple of seconds before it starts spinning

Lol, ok now everyone is going to think I'm out of my mind. The watch was in my hand, as I went to push the pillow out there was a whirling sound. I don't think it was the rotor, how could it go from being stationary to spinning for two seconds. I did not jar the watch. Maybe leftover Halloween gremlins?

But watch was running when I picked it up. Strange?

Total guess...Sounds like the spring uncoiling?
Maybe it got stuck...service may be in order?

Could it have been the sound of the friction of the pillow dragging on the watch as you popped it out?

Thanks guys. It's running strong. Gus is right about the service. Embarrassed to say but this will be its first service. I need to be in L.A. in a few weeks, think I'll drop it off at ABC. Thanks again.

Pretty confident it was the rotor if you felt it, other parts inside the watch weighs about nothing in comparison to the case and couldn't cause what you are describing. I wouldn't worry...

If it works don't fix it; if it's broke it needs fixing. For now it's working; for how long who knows but you can wait I'm certain.

I agree, but I'm thinking my "if it ain't broke"...system may be coming to an end. It has never been serviced. I got it new in 1994. I'm hoping when the watchmaker opens the back, dust doesn't come out.

I am a firm believer in the "if bit ain't broke..." school of thought but after 20+ years, a bit of TLC is in order

PS
Decide if you want it polished or not, if not, I would leave the bracelet home when I bring the watch in and bring a magic marker to write on the service receipt in large letters

"Movement service only
DO NOT POLISH
DO NOT ALTER BEZEL"
