5270p vs. 5970g

I’m looking to add a PCC to these three currently in my collection. I’m leaning towards the 5970g due to the 40mm case and symmetric dial. But... the 5270p is really good value on the secondary market right now and that salmon is so good. Anyone have experience with both? Curious everyone else’s thoughts.

Superb collection. My self is not a fan of pink dial watches so I would got for a 5970G. I wonder what is the secondary market price for a 5270P?

I can get a good example 5970g for around 145k and a 5270p for around 155k.

I'd go with the 5970. It's the last in that PCC lineage to have a Lemania movement. Definitely more collectible.

Patek salmon on platinum is very special, and that 5270p is breathtakingly beautiful. I will take the 5270p on aesthetics alone. Hard to say what is the future value. Size-wise, the 5270p is very close to your 5320 lug-to-lug.

It will be more difficult if the choice is between the Saatchi 5970p salmon and 5270p, but the price is also very different. BTW the 5970p at 145k appears to be very good value.

No bad choice here, and early congrats!

i'd take the 5970 over the 5270 for the symmetry alone. Also not a big fan of the pink dial.

I am ok with asymmetry but I neither like that they crammed all three subdials into the lower half of the dial nor the numerals on the 5270P.

Apart from the 5970G I would also give the 3970G and P a fair chance. Much cleaner look w/o the tachy which is quite useless (for me anyway, and even more so on a dress watch). In reality the tachy has just been introduced to fill the additional dial space from upsizing the 3970 while keeping the same movement.

Obviously the 40mm size of 5970 is more "modern" than the 36mm of 3970 but I tend to prefer smaller dress watches. The issue to get comfortable with in the 3970 is the size to thickness ratio / the proportions. On that front the 5970 wins easily but at cost of the less clean dial IMO.

Apologies I read wrongly - I thought you are comparing 5970p to 5270p. End result doesn't change, I will take the 5270p in a heartbeat vs a 5970g.

Tough one. I understand the allure of the last Lemania PCC, but the 5270 is a magnificent watch. At this price point, collectability inevitably plays a role in the decision making process, but my heart and personal taste point towards a brand new, modern piece, with a pure breed patek caliber.

For me it would be a 5270g blue dial, 3rd gen (no chin).

In general, I am would recommend a P over a G. However in the case of the 5270P, I would only get it if you like the salmon dial. Salmon dial color is not for everyone and is not to my liking. At this price level, make sure you really like the watch and definitely try it on the wrist before making the purchase.

I love the pink dial, so 5270P for me. I also prefer the platinum metal, wears heavier on the wrist.

Have you thought about the 5970p? It is more expensive, but may be had for a relative bargain if you set your price and call around.

Otherwise, yes I had the 5970g until about 12 years ago and prefer the lugs over the 5270p. The salmon dial is a wild card, so some love it, some don’t, but all respect it. To me they are somewhat different pieces. Bang for buck, a great piece albeit less expensive option than those mentioned is the 5270g with blue dial (no chin) can be had for a very decent price. Not sure if my response was helpful tho...

Yes, now thinking that the 5970p would be the right choice. Prefer the dial and the p would be the most collectible of the standard issue 5970 imo.

wow, you watch collection is already perfect the way it is without adding anything.
if i had to choose between the two, i would go with the 5270p because you don't have that metal or dial color in your collection.
yes Hodinkee predicts that 5970 is a highly collectable watch but we don't know yet the potential of the 5270p, my guess is that it won't last long after the introduction of the 5270J and would be disconnected soon making it a future collectable. you can't go wrong with each, being born in Seattle i like me some salmon :)

for me it came down to seeing them in person and trying them on.. 3970, 5970, 5270....

I thought I would (and wanted to) love the 5270P more...but the 'click' for me was with the 5970G...but it is a personal taste thing. They are all great watches and hard to imagine how any one them can be a bad choice...you are picking among the best PCC in the world...

I will also throw out that my guess is that the 5270P will be discontinued early in the new year (February-ish) and with that the supply on the used market will get gobbled up.

enjoy the search / hunt / decision ... it is what collecting is all about!

To me I think the 3970 should also be considered. The answer between 3970 and 5970 was not clear before the 5270 was introduced:

I have all thee
3970EP-019 while small, it is very balanced dial and easy to read. on my 6.5" wrist, it looks fine
5970P-001 it's listed as 40mm, but it wears quite small and for my eyes, it is VERY hard to read. but it is the darling of PCC, rightly or not. also the most $$$ of the three
5270P-001, a big 41mm easy to read if you like salmon dial, which I do.. it is very rare to have salmon dial in a platinum case.

I think once on your wrist, you will seen which fits u best.

I have a 5270p stunning and very different piece. But why don’t you get the 5370P in black the grail of all Patek Philipe late releases for me ! A different feeling. It blends with you. Discontinued this year and the price is going up fast.
