How young did you retire?

Or intend to?
How have you found it?
Or will you work forever?

I’m 48. I could retire now if I had to. It’s lifestyle for me though - watches, holidays, private education and university fees. Plus I think I’d actually miss the hustle and bustle of running a business.

Everyone’s different, what’s your story?

Not me. I will not miss anything about working.

45 and I would retire tomorrow. I can't stand owning a business anymore. It's getting tougher and tougher each and every year. Absolutely devastating work hours ( 12 hrs in a row today and still have 3 hours to go,that is a HUUGE toll if you have a family ) and money is getting shorter each and every year. Yeah it's true,I have about 4 months off in winter but that does not compensate for this jail like summer months. I've been trying to sell the business for a while now but no success so far,at least not for the money we're asking.
Let's face it : work sucks.

So you could retire and live for 30-40 more years but the lifestyle (vacation/watches/...) still cost that much money? I thought that would be manageable. No idea what kind of amount you have in mind though or what your current situation is.

I could never retire. I need some sort of structure in my day. Work is good for that, and they throw money at you for doing it.

I pretty much retired at 45 (4 years ago). My wife works and has a great job which she loves. We saved and invested a lot into stocks that have done really well.

Same here. The minute I can retire I'll be gone so fast I'll leave skid marks. And I like my job. Just like retirement better.

How young did you retire?

42. Never.

I cannot even wrap my head around the idea of taking a vacation, much less retiring. I get bored out my mind by Saturday afternoon.

I need my work.

I can’t imagine something like reading or gardening (or even travel or sailing, both of which I love) satisfying that need. I’d end up despondent and miserable, sitting in front of the TV all day. Creating no value...

Retired at 51! Sold my house on Long Island and move down here! No more commuting, getting up at 3:30 am! No more stress and no more deadlines! And nope, I’ll never work again!

The minute my mind stops functioning correctly. I'm lucky to have found a career that started when I was 12, grew to a passion in my teens, catapulted me through school and has given me a fantastic lifetime of experiences. It feeds my mind. The journey continues infinitum.

I'm 50 and my goal is to not have to work at 60, not necessarily retire, but not have to work. House should be paid off, so it won't be too expensive to live.

Goal was 40, and by and large was able to before that age. I have Young kids so I’ll wait until they get to college. Then I might do something easy... just to get some healthcare

Effectively retired at 36 when I became a house husband - around 4 1/2yrs ago. Dabble here and there in a couple of part time jobs but can’t see myself working for anyone again.

I was off a week and ended up not going away.

Bored out of my mind.

Definitely work less days but will be a while before completely retired. Down to 2-3 days a week will be perfect.

If all goes according to plan, I will “retire” when I hit 55. That means I will go back and do what I love: Teaching.

Retired at 58 with 34 years and went back to work 10 months later. It's not a career just a job with a bunch of retired cops. No more phones calls in the middle of the night. I sleep good and stay relaxed now.
