First Rolex Purchase - 1971 Datejust 1601

Hello fellow members,

Finally pulled the trigger on my first Rolex. I didn't know why it took me so long considering I have already jumped into the realm of a modern Royal Oak, but without further ado, I purchased this one from a fellow Canadian on my business trip to Toronto.

I was looking upon this beauty as a daily. Subtle and elegant without carrying the "presence" of a Sub, which I also considered. Under the radar being a vintage piece as well.

26XXXXX serial number would date it to 1971. Was just serviced and oiled. Movement and dial is clean. Watch is well worn in its past history (little nicks here there on the case). Slight polish in the past sometime. Came with its original jubilee. Original crystal had a chip and was replaced with this generic one.

Cheers everyone!

PS: if anyone has any suggestions on where or who I can located a geniune OEM Rolex crystal from, please let me know. I would like to eventually put one on.

Couple potato pics of when I picked it up, separate bracelet pic, and one on the wrist for today.

Man, what a fantastic model! Love those vintage DJ's. I'm looking for a vintage AK with date.

Big congrats on an all-time classic. In this day and age of soaring prices for vintage sports models, these DJs are still relatively affordable. And beautiful, of course.

Congrats on this classic. My favorite reference too.

My 60s ref 1601 coin bezel and you are absolutely correct that date just is nice. And very comfortable to wear.

Very, very nice. Fantastic choice! If I were to advise folks going out new I’d do it this way too.

Thanks everyone for their complements! Really appreciate it!

The workmanship and timelessness of a vintage is just amazing. Especially when find such a clean original example.

Seeing everyone with the jubilee bracelet on makes me want to slab on that beauty as well. Haha, my concern is always the stretch though...

2nastie - very nice choice! CONGRATS!! I really like the vintage Rolex too. If you look at my avatar you will see a TT DJ also from 1971 (my birth yr) that is my daily wear. I'm in the market for a period correct 7836 oyster bracelet for summertime. I prefer the look of the black gator strap but I've ruined 2 with sweat from wrist.

Congrats again!

Very nice 2nastie, I was admiring the same exact model on my lawyer's wrist last week. The DJ is everything you need in a watch and nothing you don't, in my opinion
