Juho,

thanks so much for the thoughtful and informative review! your words and considerations will have a direct impact on my future decision making!

you have touched on many of the thoughts and questions I share, having lusted for a Porsche since I was too young to drive.

it is a bucket list endeavor for me, I anticipate the opportunity presenting itself in the next 2 years as I transition my life a bit. As you said, I would have had one 20 years ago if funds and the situation made it possible so don't think of me having a midlife crisis... its just a matter of timing.

I have been dreaming of this for sooooo long

Yeah it's in great condition. Paint is original so it has a few hairline scratches and stone chips on the hood but I don't mind. It could be polished to almost perfect condition but I don't even want that.

These cars are designed for driving, not garage queens.

Perfect low mileage examples are way too expensive to even enjoy. That's why I wasn't looking for such car. One in very good condition and a reasonable mileage was just fine.

My friend has this very problem with his 993 Turbo S. It's a low mileage example and they fetch more than half a million these days. He doesn't even want to drive it anymore. That's not the point of a hobbyist car to me. Just like my steel Rolexes, I want to WEAR them and wear them properly.

As someone who leased a 991 c2 and paid for 18000 miles per year I wholeheartedly agree, I daily drove it in northern climate through winters! Very capable.

Just read it again. Great write up! Actually picking my ‘70 911t up today or tomorrow from having the clutch replaced and 15” polished Fuchs put on. Trying to get it back to being as original as it was from day one.
A few more cosmetic parts to replace, then deciding if I’m taking it back to the original color.
These are such fun to own and drive!

I've heard those long hoods are pretty amazing to drive. They are so raw, analog.

And I definitely agree with the originality. I won't do any visual mods to my car, ever.

Beautiful 993!

I really enjoyed the write-up and appreciate you returning your car to original spec.

Amazing.

993 Targa was a panorama roof before there was a panorama roof.

I think it's the first ever panorama roof, right?

Buying and owning an air cooled Porsche 911

My first was a silver 911SC Targa.

Looked much like this:

Very, very nice Richris1. She's a beauty.

My 1971 911T originally came with the 14" Fuchs which was apparently the exception rather than the rule. It looks like they moved the antenna from the passenger side of your 70 to the driver side of my 71?

Great pick up Juho and a really solid write up as well. I've read it twice and forwarded it to a couple friends.

First... absolutely beautiful long hood. In my dream world I'd own a long hood, 80's pre G-box, 964 and 993. Long hoods are the most analog of them all and I'm really looking forward to drive one.

And about this 993 review article... it was received well everywhere. I guess it was not too technical. The only thing people complained was to usage of model variation numbers (964, 993, 996). They don't tell anything to the casual observer.

I’ve owned a 993 TT, a longhood 911E, and a bunch of G-body cars, and in my opinion the true 911 experience is with the torsion bar suspension cars. The air-cooled engine is just a part of the 911 equation, not all of it. I do love the sport seats in the OP’s car; we don’t see many of those here in the states.

I believe the sport package was only European option and those seats were part of the package.

It had M030 suspension (1cm lower), sports seats and limited slip differential.

They never offered that package in the US. I don't know why.

US cars also have higher suspension than the European default. See this one for example. It looks almost like an SUV. Weirdness.

That's correct. It's quite an interesting mechanism. Not for the faint of heart when it breaks, though. Ask me how I know...

I really love the air-cooled 911. I am always looking around for one but always worried my purchase will be a money pit in unexpected repairs. I have a GT3 992 which is an incredible car but always dream one day I will find a nice air-cooled 911 with the whale tail rear spoiler.

993's are extremely reliable and simple cars. 964's are the same quality (almost identical interior etc) but they need regular valve adjustments and are more prone to leak oil (for whatever reason).

My 993 repair bill after 6000 kilometers since March, April is about 100 euros (new DME relay).

The build quality is amazing. My car is 28 years old and it feels new. I'm not exaggerating.

Check out this video and how these cars are made.

This is a fun thread. I love old Porsches. I am learning a lot through reading the notes and comments and @JP. I bookmarked your blog post about your 911 993 to read later. I would love one of these vintage air cooled 911s someday. Until then, I would be pleased as punch if I can find a good deal on a 997 C4 cabrio when I am ready to say good bye to my old Saab convertible! LOL

Are you guys following the Porsche IPO next week on the 29th? It's expected to be the largest IPO in 2022 to date.
