Leather straps and Patek watches

I'm getting more and more convinced everyday that I should add a Patek to my collection. I don't see it being a sports model, but a dress watch. The Calatrava is nice but my eyes keep getting drawn to some of the Complication models.

Regardless, I'm 99% sure whatever I settle on will have a leather strap and be more of a dressy watch. I don't get too dressed up all that often, but for work there are enough times I wear business casual and a sports coat. I think a dress watch works in that outfit, but my question is around the color of the strap, the metal, and the rest of one's outfit.

Are there any general guidelines or principals one might follow when it comes to the strap color, the case color (WG vs YG etc), and something like color of shoes? I would want something pretty versatile as I wear brown and black shoes quite a bit. I guess one could get a second strap in the other leather color as well?

Anyway - would love to hear your opinions and thoughts.

I doubt there's any consensus, but classic black is hard to beat. If you go with black, choose a matte black for more versatility. Gloss black is too dressy. Besides black, a dark brown is great too, and possibly even more versatile. Matte would still be best.

Looking at their website it seems almost everything is a glossy strap. Are there options at time of purchase or is getting a matte strap done after market?

Not sure what, if anything, the AD or boutique would have in stock--you'd have to ask--but surely you could source one after purchase. May take a bit of time if you want a factory strap. Other sources should have readily available matte straps similar or the same as the factory Patek strap (except the logo, of course).

I had a similar line of thinking myself. I recently bought a 5205g from my AD. I love it, but the glossy black strap really makes it look formal...So after about a week of ownership I ordered a deployant clasp and a matte blue leather strap for it. The blue will go great with the dial...and allow for wearing with brown and black.

I'll post pictures when it comes in.

If you want something very versatile then definitely get a: white, off white or cream color.
that just goes with any color suit, jacket or shoes.
brown or black strap does go with everything too (although i do love dark brown)

My 5212 came with a brown strap that never quite worked for me. I ordered a 5172 blue suede/white stitched deployment strap and WG buckle and I now wear the watch much more often.

The glossy appearance does wear away some as the watch is worn. So if you like the color of the strap then consider that. If you want to change color then you might as well get the finish that you want. I agree the black on the 5205g doesn’t complement the dial and indices well. Another thing to consider on straps is the deployant vs pin buckle. I like pin buckles for their thinness and comfort. The deployant clasp adds thickness with a bulky calatrava cross and metal clasp. If you work on a computer you might notice this. Once I have the watch on, I prefer the pin buckle.

I love the black strap on my 6119G ... but it does make it quite formal. Looking for the best option to make it an easier wear casually. Here's where I'm at right now:

I enjoy the idea of the 6119G on the 6119R strap:

I like a black or colored strap on the 6119g. I think the brown looks best on the R. Maybe try a lighter saddle brown or terra cotta color of you really want that? Of course it’s your watch so do what makes you happy.

Don't worry too much about the strap color or material (minus rubber). With most modern PPs you can get pretty creative and bring uniqueness/personal touch with whatever you choose.

That's what fun about straps. You aren't swimming with it, etc so it will be fine.

As for case material, its a personal choice. The WG or P is of course, more subtle. RG is a good mix if you want some color.

I don't mind YG as a color or material, but I'm not too big of a fan of it on my watches. It gets pretty dressy. I'm in a shirt blazer, etc. (or semi-casual) majority of the week and RG is my max.

My RG Daytona and YG DD give me that color. I’m pretty interested in WG at this point. Though I must admit the PP RG is very nice.

Leather watch straps are a popular way to add a touch of luxury and individuality to your timepiece. Not only do they look great, but they also feel comfortable and secure on the wrist.

patek straps are easy to swap out thanks to the pull tab spring bars.

a white dial watch will allow you to choose a wide variety of strap colors to go from casual to dress.

while I appreciate the versatility of a sports watch as much as the next guy, I agree there is something incredibly satisfying about a patek on leather.

you'll have to purchase straps from patek or at minimum independents that offer the cut out for the patek spring bars so you don't have to use steel bars in a gold watch.

recommendation if it is possible for you are the perpetual calendars, they are incredibly thin and so Patek.
*3940 hotter than it ever was (just like Philippe stern wore as his daily)

5940/5140... can be had for a discount in this over hyped sports watch market

rubber does not hit the mark for me though an exception has occurred with my 5711G on an oem rubber strap that feels and looks like leather... why isn't this strap technology on every watch?

and ... imho 39mm max size for dress watch on strap.

Are there fashion rules, sure. But the main rule is what do you enjoy? I’ve crossed fashion color rules countless times but my eyes have always been happy at what I see regardless. I love blue leather straps on platinum/WG and dark brown on gold/rose gold. But really anything can work as long as you enjoy it. Get a couple and mix it up!

When it comes to choosing the color of a leather strap for a dress watch, there are a few general guidelines you can follow.

Black leather straps are a classic and versatile choice that can be worn with both formal and business casual attire.
Brown leather straps are a great option if you want something that is a bit more casual and pairs well with earth tones and other warm colors.
Neutral colors such as gray, tan, or beige can also be a good choice as they can be worn with a variety of outfits.
As for the case color, white gold and yellow gold are both popular choices for dress watches. White gold is a bit more formal and pairs well with light-colored outfits, while yellow gold has a warmer tone and can complement darker or more colorful outfits.

In terms of matching the watch to the rest of your outfit, it's generally recommended to match the metal of the watch to the metal of other jewelry you're wearing. For example, if you're wearing silver cufflinks, a white gold watch would complement them nicely.

When it comes to shoes, it's best to match the color of the leather strap to the color of the shoes. For example, if you're wearing black shoes, a black leather strap would be a good choice. If you're wearing brown shoes, a brown leather strap would work well.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and you should ultimately choose the strap and metal color that you feel most comfortable and confident wearing. And you can always have a second strap in the other leather color as you mentioned, so you can easily switch them out depending on the outfit.

Camille Fournet. They call it “grained calf leather.”

@Bobernet I particularly like the first picture (blue strap) combo. I remember seing in the past colored gold very well pairing with blue straps.

@ibr123 That 5524 is meant for your wrist and the 1st and 3rd pictures look fantastic.

I tried something different by putting a Rubber strap on 5146 to make it sportier. What do you guys think?
