It’s actually a rubber strap that came from one of the small independent watches - a Dietrich SD-1. It fits the 5146 well and allows me to mix and match.

Agree, it looks great! Would love a rubber strap on my 5396g.

Regardless, I'm 99% sure whatever I settle on will have a leather strap and be more of a dressy watch. I don't get too dressed up all that often, but for work there are enough times I wear business casual and a sports coat. I think a dress watch works in that outfit, but my question is around the color of the strap, the metal, and the rest of one's outfit.

Are there any general guidelines or principals one might follow when it comes to the strap color, the case color (WG vs YG etc), and something like color of shoes? I would want something pretty versatile as I wear brown and black shoes quite a bit. I guess one could get a second strap in the other leather color as well?

Anyway - would love to hear your opinions and thoughts.

Complicated watches are more casual than traditional dress watches. Avoid very shiny/polished straps, to keep things less formal.

I detest black shoes, so all my straps are brown or other colors.

I wear complicated Pateks, on leather, with everything from linen pants and shirts to jeans and sweatshirts, to slacks and sport coat. I don’t wear suits anymore.

There you have white gold, yellow gold, and platinum. Alligator, calf, and suede, in shades of brown, blue and gray.

Complications are much more flexible than they often get credit. I treat mine like a normal every day watch.

Good luck with your decisions.

Lots of strap options with these watches. I’ll second that the white/cream dials like those on my 5212a and 5320g are the most versatile.

Both navy blue and brown look good, though I prefer the brown.
