AP Only? Or diverse collection?
In terms of getting allocations and being deemed a customer that fits AP’s profile, does your SA prefer a customer that only buys AP? Or is a collector with a diverse collection across many brands? Or does it not matter at all?
I’m not sure how these questions got to my head, but they’re stuck in my head and I’m curious what others think. |

from my experience, AP really only cares about the following 2 things:
1) buy a diverse range of pieces from AP (ROO, RO, Code, ROC, ladies, high complications, PM) 2) not a flipper Now, there are many ways to demonstrate #1 and #2. if you have a diverse collection, it shows that you have money. it does not prove, however, that you are a serious collector (you could just be showing your "inventory" of watches that you plan to flip/sell at some point) The only real way AP weeds out flippers and tries to sell to genuine clients that are passionate about the brand is to encourage building a relationship with the SAs. This is why it sometimes feel like an interview when you speak to them. They want someone that will buy somewhat less desirable pieces (ladies, ROO, Code) before you get an RO in SS that everyone wants. They also want to see if you will purchase an ROC after you get that RO SS. Then they want to see if you might purchase a PM or QP. Then perhaps an Open-worked. Perhaps a Tourbillon afterwards. Then probably a Concept afterwards. Obviously not many people will make that far, but they generally want a repeat customer and having a diverse collection from many brands is 1 way you can prove that you will continue to buy APs, but it certainly is not THE most important factor. With that said, I've never heard of a situation where AP will frown on you for purchasing from other brands. Again, as long as you don't come across as an obvious flipper |

In my relatively limited experience AP sell to clients who can genuinely appreciate the brand for its quality and history and probably also people who aren’t too demanding. The sales people have usually spent years selling luxury goods to the sorts of people who typically buy those goods so although I don’t really know what they’re looking for, they do.

I believe AP wants to sell to customers who want to go on a collections journey with the brand, clients that have passion for the brand. I think having a diverse watch collection of other brands certainly doesn't hurt. They want to see clients buy multiple pieces per year along with having a spouse added to the account as well.

I don’t think it would matter if you are already a long standing client and they know you pretty well. But let’s say 2 new clients walk in to the same boutique, talk to the same SA and provided everything else is equal I am inclined to think that maybe the guy who has a more interesting and diverse collection is more likely to get the allocation than the guy who only has clearly collects hype watches.

My guess would be that for smaller collections, AP only (or whatever brand of interest) may be better but for large and valuable collections it probably matters less.
I have one AP and am interested in a second but not really much more than that. I’ve had larger collections but really prefer having a handful of watches that I can actually wear often. So even though I’m a collector it probably works to my disadvantage to be truthful with my preferences since I am unlikely to be purchasing multiple (3+) watches from any brand Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
