Ways to Save Money
Quote:
Opposite coast from me. Florida is tough right now. If it’s in good shape or a new build in a desirable area, deals will be hard to find. I’ve literally got one subdivision that is keeping its entire division afloat for sales. I don’t know what your level of tolerance would be for it but a house that needs updating in a great neighborhood can be had cash for substantially less than what it’s “face” value would be. In your case, I think the best solution would be to use your former employer's "vehicle" for private purposes I think just the sight of you would convince anyone that it is worth giving you a fair discount

I stopped spending money on things to impress others or because someone suggested that I should buy them to feel myself trendy or up to date or even to have confidence. Now I do this only if I feel this way on my own.
But the main saving in my life was my TIME savings related to my lifestyle change. I used to drive to every single place in our city (which is more or less the size of a small town in the US) because I felt like that even like this it would take a long time to get to one place and back. However during the Covid lockdown, I realized that several places are not really far from my home, I just FELT that because of the traffic. The main realization was that if I walk, I get there in almost the same time, but because of this I can sport twice as much as before. So it was just an added bonus that my expenses on fuel or car maintenance were mass reduced. So as now I have more money, I can "invest" into an art or watches and so on. This way I feel more confortable as I simply removed the TIME wasting from my life. |

We had a milkman up until sometime in the early 80’s. He would come on Monday and Thursday. We’d leave a note in the milk box along with cash when he left the bill. My parents still have the milk box outside their house.

Love Delray Beach. The beach is clean and Atlantic Ave is a great place to go.

"My condo has 19’ ceilings and is very hard to keep warm. Instead of jacking up the heat, I’m being more strategic about it. I’m also wearing Warner clothes inside"
Ditto, wearing a hooded sweatshirt is standard attire around my place, thermostat is rarely set above 63degF. |

Someone else mentioned eating out. Lot of offers Mon - Thur. pre theatre etc. we tend to avoid weekends. Not sure if this counts as saving money but been lucky over the years to be able to do Overtime so when something like a watch/ motorbike purchase on horizon - feels like not dipping into my regular income EBay/ gumtree or other sites for selling off unwanted items Get a card that does cash back. Nothing better than cash back for money spending anyway |

But I'd be interested to know what the actual savings would be for someone to wear outdoor attire in the house during the winter vs someone who didn't and kept the house at a "normal" temp. I grew up in Canada with brutal winters but our houses were always warm and cozy. When I lived in San Jose CA I had a friend who's house was freezing in the winter and I just shook my head. Could not live that way. As for homes with high ceilings, just put in a fan and draw the warm air down.

Strongly disagree, TBone. You simply made everyone so hot and bothered, the temperature needed to be lowered for safety reasons.

When we go to Hawaii in Sept, we have a pet sitter come and live for 2 weeks, who is a native of CA and she sets the temp for 72 all day. When I checked the bill after getting home, for that time period I hardly noticed any extra expense from that.

"I’d be interested too."
Obviously a-lot of variables, but generally my electric bill is about 40% less compared to my neighbors, with about the same amount of finished living space. You get used to it, and 63deg feels comfortable albeit w/a sweater/sweatshirt. |

We set our thermostat at 70f all year round and our utility bills are already very low as we have solar panels, and all upgraded doors, windows and insulation. Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk |

to save more money - drive older car longer or better yet, dont drive and work from home, and group trips together. Every mile you drive less is money earned

Do you think that through the winter ( not sure where you live) you save how much compared to the neighbors? $100, $400, $1000??? for the season. Not trying to put you on the spot, just curious what the numbers would be, and how significant the trade off would be for that much discomfort (from my point of view). Where I live, near the coast in LA, the stupid SC Edison bill fluctuates so damn much I can never get a handle on it from one month to the other. We can have consecutive months with no heat and no air conditioning on, and the bills are still all over the place. I'm guessing they're just trying to gouge us to pay for all the forest fires they started.
