Would you trade a Rolex COMEX for,a 5990?

I think I have the opportunity to trade. COMEX 16600 for a NIB 5990. Would you do that trade?

Depends on condition. If it’s a reasonable condition COMEX, then No. COMEX Rolex are rare, and unlikely to ever be produced down the road. 5990 although difficult to attain, is likely to be produced in greater number than a COMEX Rolex.

edit: after seeing the picture of the COMEX, it’s a NO from me. The COMEX looks great. And if it’s full set, genuine Rolex, it’s a piece of horological history right there.

Looking at this trade you could say if you don’t care for the Comex relevance to the submariner history then yes.
But if you do value this significance, this is a trade I would not make.
Rare mint condition Comex Submariners are like hens teeth and as previous members have mentioned the 5990A most likely see larger production numbers and is still in production.

The Rolex other than having the word "COMEX" added to its dial, it's just a vintage Sub.
The PP is a modern art piece that someone really put a lot of care to craft.

Nope, I wouldn't trade it. COMEX subs are extremely rare and will never be produced again.

Depends where you stand on owning rarity vs owning enjoyment.

5990 is far more enjoyable, useful and technically accomplished to live with.

Yes a comex sub/sd is arguably rare, but some say mainly given to office staff and never saw service (no idea how accurate this is).

As I have no affinity to owning such a thing, (maybe extra print on the dial might be an avenue I go down once I have everything else in future) I would easily do this trade and actually look for a nice condition 5513 if I wanted to keep the flame alive for that particular era of subs.

Its like the Tiffany dial or double stamped pateks, they just dont interest me in the way it does some. Rarity aside, its the watch that does it for me, not what's printed on the dial.

Soon enough that NIB 5990 may well become a lot less hard to get from the AD than over the past 3-4 years. The Comex not so much.

5990 can be bought anytime. Regular production.

The Rolex is collectible, but isn't otherwise special. Let's be honest, it is a dial with some printing on it. If you're looking for a long-term hold and investment, the Comex is probably better.

Now, if you're talking about a watch you want to wear, there's no question the PP is superior.

I would rather wear a 5990 than a vintage sub 1000x over, but if I had a COMEX in the safe, I'd leave it there.

I don’t know about your financial standing, but if I purchased it at the sort of money they were 20 or 30 years ago for example, then I would absolutely do it, as I’d never be able to purchase the PP at its cost right now.

For somebody who'd never be able to purchase the 5990 my recommendation would be to sell the Comex in order to invest the money. They'd have too much money tight up in one watch no matter which.

Yeah... This^^^. If collectible / investment is important to you > keep the Comex. If you want to enjoy an incredible watch > trade for 5990.

I am a bit biased since 5990/1A is my holy grail watch :)
