A(nother) antique clock

This is one of my favorites of my collection (I know, I say that a lot ). This is called the “cyclometer” and was introduced in 1933. One of the early efforts of electric clocks was to create a digital model. This is the first commercial one that Telechron sold and it was $9.95 MSRP. That is over $200 today and a high sum during the depression. These are INCREDIBLY complicated, converting electrical energy in to an accurate mechanical time keeping device is not easy. Sure, when you are powering gears like a second, minute and hour hand to go round a dial is (fairly) straight forward and easy, but to do it moving wheels with numbers on them is much much more difficult. When I purchased this, I spent months trying to restore it, but I admit, I failed. I sent it to the recognized Telechron expert in the country, and he did a fantastic job making it as good as new. Because they are complicated they are very rare to find in working order, but do come up for auction from time to time. I was drawn to this one because it was a reward for a salesman for GEs home laundry equipment, fourth quarter of 33. You can read the inscription. I find it really neat because some salesman won this 90 years ago…. And now I have it. Telechron eventually improved their digital clocks, moving to a horizontal setup. This proved easier to manufacture and a more reliable timepiece.

Anyway, hope you learned something and enjoy

What kind of noise (if any) do they clocks make?

Good question Paul. While most of my clocks run silent, this one… does not. The wheels are forwarded by a mechanical arm, there is a distinctive “Click” Sometimes I hear it, sometimes not, but that is why it is in my office and not my living room

This is a neat clock and a great little history lesson. I really enjoy learning about these and think it's a great hobby (or extension in addition to wrist watches).

Thanks Brian

I am actually relatively new to collecting and restoring, I started maybe 10 or 12 years ago. I have always been in to antiques, (in high school thought I was going to be an Archeologist), and have always liked old clocks. However with my Electrical Engineering degree I became interested specifically in electric clocks, and started taking them apart; see how they worked. That lead to my current addiction- I mean, Hobby

Anyway, that is a long-winded explanation but thanks again Brian.

Beautiful clocks Paul.
Sadly, of an era where things were made in the U.S.A and quality mattered.
I see you take the time to set the time on all of them.
