This morning I am in there (shipping a watch) and strike up a conversation with him about watches. This seems more and more prevalent amongst the young, but what he said next floored me.

I was astounded. Pointing at my watch I said: “So you can’t tell the time on this?” He said he could not, then called over the other worker. Also a nice kid and (seemingly) intelligent. He asked the question was he able to read a watch (analogue) time… To my horror…. The SECOND young person also said he could not, he checked his phone to see the time.

I…. I…..

I weep for the future.
Blame the parents.

If 'analogue time' became a Tik-Tock fashion thing, they'd learn soon enough.
No doubt, one of 'em will achieve YouTube fame (the ultimate ambition, it seems) and a trillion 'likes' for being able to 'tell the time' on some giant Swatch type analogue accessory.

Me, I was born in the forties and can look at the sky and tell the time....just like Mick Dundee.

A happy place, or incredibly bright street lamps. Sounds like a great place to be.

Chewbacca just ask the butler, maid, doorman or driver what time it is.

If you think that's bad, I had an even more eye opening experience.
I was at a high school fund raiser. I bought something for $25 and hand the 3 high school students a $50 bill. They looked at the bill for several seconds and after a little conference, one of the students gets out their iPhone and uses the calculator to compute my change. They hand me $25 and sheepishly say they wanted to double check my change! And this is a high school PRIVATE school!!

Greenp, that's a worry.
Sounds like there's not much chance of an American Olyimpic Darts Team, or American Cribbage Team...to name but a few basic activities where mental arithmetic, is a necessity.
My guess would be that you could grab a couple of kids out of a 'Bush' School in say Nigeria or any school in Mumbai and they'd have no problem giving you your correct change from a 50.

Was going to say, this is where public school shines.

While the good school’s kids can’t break a 50, the underprivileged, under served, school drop out, “entrepreneur” can do it in his sleep.

Capitalism is the cure!

I’m sorry that Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, clowned on your alma mater.

Did you have a classmate named Clarence into rapping

How was it? I lived down the road in Berkley and occasionally drove past it. Always thought it was a beautiful campus.

It was (is) a beautiful campus, but... did I like it? No. A million and a half reasons, but we will let that lie. I was a Jock, so played three sports, really enjoyed that, as for the rest of high school there..... ..... ......

You don’t get blamed for everything, only the collapse of the electrical grid.
