Questions on 1016 and bracelet

Hi all,

As some may know, I'm in the market for a 1016.

I got offer an example dated 1978 per the serial number on the case. But the bracelet and clasp are dated 1981.

Seller mentioned the watch was originally sold in 1981so the bracelet and clasp are original matching the year of sale.

Is that possible? A 1978 case is fitting with a 1981 bracelet and sold in 1981?

Appreciate your advice!

Thanks!

You cannot use the many dating charts to absolutely date a watch closer than within a couple of years.

Certainly a chart dated 1978 watch serial can have 1981 chart dated bracelet codes. You have to do more research than that to properly evaluate a purchase, especially of a desirable model.

Thanks Tools. Appreciate your note.

Yes I totally agree and I'm not basing the purchase on the dating charts alone. But this was something that felt weird to me so I thought I'll ask about it specifically.

It might not be something that you would expect to see and it would be more reassuring to have evidence of that 1981 purchase date, but again, another chart could date that watch much later.

This is why provenance of early watches can increase their value considerably.

Since i already start the thread. i thought i might as well get some comments relating to the rest of the watch. One other thing which stood out was that the coronet on the dial look "tall" compared to the other examples I've seen (the gap between the tip of the triangle at 12 o'clock & the tip of the crown seems small). Although i did come across some example with relatively taller coronets, the majority seems to have a bigger gap between the coronet & the triangle at 12.

I wonder if that is a red flag & if there's anything which stands out.

Thanks!

The coroner height looks fine. Here’s a similar example
