Rolex

Everyone knows the brand, did you buy your first Rolex for Fashion or Function?
Or for another reason?

For me it was a sign of accomplishment. Same with my last purchase. Did I mention that I use them as watches?

Watches have more function than fashionably knowing the time at a glance?

I always wore a watch for function but thinking back when l first had enough money for a luxury item, not including hot rods or sting rays it was a fashion statement as well being a TT DJ36 instead of my usual seiko.

Trendy, back in the day an SF guy had a Rolex and sapphire ring.....but most could not afford one unless they were deployed to a high paying Per Diem location. So, most like myself wore a good old SEIKO or Casio......

So when I could afford one I purchased it to accomplish the trendy old days.......

Rolex

I needed to wear a watch to keep track of my commitments during the day anyway. Had an Omega from my parents for many years in High School & University. Then in business won many Seiko’s that I wore. But I never bought a watch until 2000...

Once I discovered the Polar Expl. II in a National Geographic advert, I had to have it. But not being a spelunker, can’t say it was necessary. I did use it traveling across multiple TZ’s in USA. But I could do that simple math in my head, so can’t really say it was for function.

Neither. Not function because I have a Casio that will out-function my Rolex all day long. Not fashion because it just as easily passes for any other watch, and it's not something people (other than WISes) notice anyway.

So what's my first Rolex to me? Not gonna lie. It's wristwatch porn. All day long, I can stare at those curves, the perpetual motion, the beauty of the whole, as well as the individual parts.... oh damn I need a cold shower

I blame Magnum P.I., James Bond and Detective James Crockett for my introduction to Rolex! It wasn't function or fashion, I just thought it was cool... A hundred years ago, of course :-)

I blame Sonny Crockett as well, saw an episode of Miami Vice when he wore the Ebel 18k Gold and took me a long time to figure out what watch it was, and had to have one, only thing was could not find one with the gold band so settled for the strap version, which is still one of my favorite watches till this day. I miss the old vice!

I bought my Rolex because I want something that I could wear as long as I can and that would be the part of my life's history
Also because I love to admire the well-crafted items like watches and folding knives

In my line of work, we used to get well and performance bonuses, that in some cases were a conciderable chunk of change, those days are long gone now unfortunately, however, these bonuses would generally end up being spent on vacations, partying or occasionally things like deposits for cars etc. Its easy to spend bonus cash in an industry where there is a lot of down time away from home, and the keeping up with the Jones's scenario creeps in, added with boredom and influence of others when sitting around the bar. I decided at one point that passing booze from bar to throat to liver to urinal was a waste and that I wanted something to show for it. I spent a lot of time with saturation divers on some locations in my early days, and these guys always had the best of everything, they were paid very (very) well, so could afford to, and watches (Rolex Sub's) were always part of their personal kit. So I put my bonuses aside and eventually bought my first Rolex, a DJ.

There aren't too many other options where I live, if you're looking for a higher end piece.
