Has anyone here had to pay for a Rolex service while their watch was still under warranty, and if so, why?

One example could be if they dropped it, where small shards of glass can fall through the date gap.

any damage not caused by a manufacturing defect is on you

If you caused damage to it then yes warranty doesnt cover that.

And it applies to most things from any manufacturer, not just Rolex.

That's why warranty is not important since most companies do their utmost best not to honour it
