The "beater" term is certainly one that is thrown about quite a bit, and probably is linked to roles earning its place in history etc. I have a couple that I wear pretty much around the clock, but I do draw a line as regards some of the activities I would involve them in such as car maintenance etc. These things are just getting too valuable and too hard to replace now with passing years, and there are so many other easier options now like G Shock etc if its something particularly risky.
