Getting PM Rolex now is safe from bubbles bursting

I am considering getting my wife an everose dytona within the next couple of months for our 10th anniversary (as u may see from my other post).

With bad signals seen in the stock markets, it’s likely (as many of you has already mentioned) that the watch bubbles will burst in not so distance future.

Since PM rolexes are now being sold in the gray market at significantly below MSRP (15-20%), will it be reasonable to say that the watch will hold value pretty well when poop hitting the fan?

Not sure how anyone could know this and not sure why this is a factor in deciding to buy your wife an anniversary gift?

"Hi honey, here is your 10th anniversary gift. I only bought it because it will hold its value"

The majority of PM watch buyers don't buy these watches with the expectation that they will hold their value depending on the economy. I bought mine as a lifetime watch that I will pass down to my daughter, and would not count on it as a "liquid asset" in an economical downturn. One should not buy a luxury item for these reasons. A gold or platinum watch is not an investment.

Really? Bad signs? I am making it hand over fist..... Buy well my friend. Its a beautiful watch. Its a quality of life purchase and not a investment other than a investment of good taste.

If it does lose any value it won't be enough to worry about. I've just seen some very slightly used TT Daytonas at excellent prices as well.

Maybe OP is trying to make sure if the Mrs isn’t over the moon with this, he won’t be beat up on value.

I would say to you that if that were to happen, you can just wear it yourself. Of course, that leaves you still having to buy her something else...

Maybe just take her to the store with you and she can pick it out herself? Then no downside of having to sell it off if she doesn't like it.

Safe is a relative term. It's one I don't think you want to be using when you're picking out an anniversary gift for your wife.

Appreciate all your thoughts.

I am not planning to flip or anything like that. It’s just a comforting feeling to have options.

Hope to see it being passed on to the next generations...or should i get a Patek? ;-D

Well, will keep u all posted when it’s done.

Even if you buy a RG Daytona for 15-20 percent off (upper 20s) I think once it’s worn you easily lose $5k on it. No PM watch holds value even at discount but once the price drops it will stabilize.

In other words a 1 year old PM watch and a 4 year old PM watch will have very similar values (variation in price likely only due to warranty length) but will be thousands less than a discounted price and much lower than MSRP.

RG Daytona has two strikes. Gold Daytona and RG aren’t popular pieces. Not saying they are Cellinis but they aren’t like a yellow gold sub.

With that said the 116505 is a great reference. If only they had ceramic bezels.

That "now" confuses me. PM watches have always sold at significant discounts. For many of them, I'd hope for better than 20%. Even relatively popular PM watches like the white gold submariner Smurf are casually available for 25% off retail price.

and this is why you can get them at an AD but not a Daytona C as the discount game is just as bad for sales as the scarcity game is good for them.

This is the WORST possible time to buy a PM Rolex. Prices are significantly up from even a year ago, and will likely go right back to where they have been historically relatively soon.

Exactly. The tide raises all watches including PM. We complain about SS price rises on a $10k watch to $12k but some PM pieces have risen much more in price.

Not a good time to buy any Rolex atm. Its all over valued and prices are already coming down. Just wait another 6 months

Agree with the guys above that this is the worst time, up till now, to buy a PM, but a PM should be a keeper anyway unless you have money to burn.

If I were to get a PM watch, I'd keep the funds in cash and wait it out a bit.

Or another version: Honey, I want to buy you a Rolex but I didn't bcos it isnt a good time to invest this year. Be patient, wait a bit more, I will probably get you one next year depending on the market condition. For now, I give you a Casio this year first bcos it like commodity in the marketplace.
