"Skyfall" Planet Ocean sold for $254,273

Wow, just caught this story from WatchTime:

"The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean worn by Daniel Craig in “Skyfall,” the latest in the James Bond franchise (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year), was sold for $254,273 at Christie’s in London on Friday, October 5th, with all proceeds going towards Orbis, a non-profit organization that provides eye care in developing nations. This is the second highest price for a Bond watch, the highest being $255,565 for the Planet Ocean from “Casino Royale,” and the third highest being $196,056 for the Rolex from “Live and Let Die”.

I think it could start to slowly lose value a bit, as other Bond movies come up.. They're continuous production, not SE/LE

Keeping in mind its both a bond worn watch, and a one off custom made black titanium prototype Planet Ocean and its not a bad deal really. Its not a regular production watch, but rather one built to specification for the movie.

I think that is a nice donation to a worthy cause... not an investment.

True, I'm thinking more along these lines.

Analysis: Christie’s Skyfall James Bond watch sale
Oct8
Buying and Selling, Casino Royale, Omega, Resources, Skyfall, Story Titles, Wristwatch Brands

What are people missing from recent Christie’s auction of James Bond’s Omega Planet Ocean worn in Skyfall?
The recent Christie’s auction of a screen-worn Omega James Bond watch from the upcoming movie Skyfall calls for closer scrutiny and perspective here.

As I pointed out in my James Bond Watches .posterous update yesterday (which also feeds directly to this site, here), on October 5, 2012, Christie’s auctioned a titanium Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean wristwatch as part of its “50 Years of James Bond: The Auction” sale. Serial number 85247223, sold for £157,250 (US $254,273).

From that, some have suggested shock, because Christie’s estimates anticipated £6,000 to £8,000 ($9,660 to $12,880) as final pricing. But in her interview with Arel Bacs of Christie’s for Longitude last June, Meehna Goldsmith clearly distinguished the reasonable approach her firm uses in stating values for “watches” versus what can and often does come about from auctions where horology intersects Hollywood.

Look for reference at the Rolex 6238 pre-Daytona Chronograph worn on-screen by George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. In 2003, Christie’s auctioned that watch for a final sales price of £22,913 (US $39,936).

You really think the folks at Christie’s somehow forgot that? Had no idea what it portended for an auction today?

You really think a screen-worn Omega from Daniel Craig’s James Bond is gonna go for a third of what a screen-worn Rolex from George Lazenby’s James Bond commanded, almost a decade ago now?

I dunno. Maybe some newbies were genuinely astounded by this Skyfall James Bond watch getting to a $254,273 sales price.

Maybe they’re too young to remember the 2007 sale of a Casino Royale screen-worn Daniel Craig watch sold by Antiquorum via “Omegamania” auction in April of 2007, where that Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean released a CHF 250,250 (US $255,565).

Or maybe they were too lazy to look. Or maybe they can’t do math: Because it looks to me like the Casino Royale Omega took in better than a thousand bucks more than the Skyfall Omega wristwatch.

What’s Omega saying about this?

I’ve heard conflicting stories about what happens to Omega watches after they’ve been featured in James Bond movies: The actual screen-worn pieces, that is. The Antiquorum / Omegamania auction implies that at least some were retained by Omega corporate. And yet sourcing for items such as the watch we’re discussing here from Christie’s ”50 Years of James Bond: The Auction” sale appears to be Eon Productions.

Either way: Kudos to one or both for designating Orbis International as charity recipient for all proceeds from this sale. Omega deserves high praise for its significant and ongoing support of this most worthy cause, and it is the charity personally endorsed by actor Daniel Craig as Omega Brand Ambassador.

In the weeks leading up to this Christie’s auction, Omega regularly featured Daniel Craig and Orbis on its home page banner. But otherwise remained low-key in making any press statement or Tweeting about “it’s” James Bond watch being up for sale here. Even after the auction, Omega issued only this @omegawatches last Friday:

The Seamaster Planet Ocean worn by Daniel Craig in #SKYFALL has been sold for £157,250 @ChristiesInc @007 #JamesBondDay pic.twitter.com/Bk0uUE05

They also posted a news item, dated the same day. That’s the screen-capture I have above here on this James Bond Watches Blog. But this is how the text reads for clearer reference:

James Bond’s Planet Ocean auctioned for £157,250. Profits support ORBIS International.

The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean watch worn by actor Daniel Craig in his portrayal of James Bond in SKYFALL has been sold at auction for a staggering £157,250 at Christie’s in London as part of “50 Years of James Bond: The Auction”.

All of the profits from the sale of the watch will benefit ORBIS International and its Flying Eye Hospital. The organisation, which is supported by OMEGA and its brand ambassador Daniel Craig, delivers high-quality eye care to some of the world’s remotest regions and trains healthcare professionals who help their communities in the fight against preventable blindness and other eye disease.

www.orbis.org

Compare that to what Christie’s wrote about the same watch:

An Automatic Seamaster Professional “Planet Ocean” wristwatch, by Omega, worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond, a unique piece specially made in Titanium for action scenes in Skyfall

The circular black dial with Arabic quarters, luminous tapered baton and dot hour markers, luminous hands and sweep centre seconds and date aperture at “3″, in brushed and polished tonneau shaped case with helium escape valve in the band and revolving black bezel cailibrated for minutes, the glazed screw down case back revealing the movement, movement signed Omega Co-axial 8500, Barrel Two, Barrel One, Thirty-Nine (39) Jewels Swiss Adjusted to Five (5) Positions and Temperature and no. 85247223, to maker’s intergral bracelet with deployant clasp; case 42 mm wide….

… and what Omega wrote about its Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Skyfall Limited Edition wristwatch:

The watch has a 42 mm brushed and polished stainless steel case and a matching patented screw-and-pin bracelet whose divers’ clasp is engraved with “007”. The rotating diving bezel is distinguished by its matt black ceramic ring with a chromium nitride diving scale.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M SKYFALL Limited Edition is powered by OMEGA’s exclusive new Co-Axial calibre 8507. SKYFALL 007 is on its rotor in black-varnished engraving. The movement is visible through sapphire crystal in the brushed screw-in caseback.

What’s missing?

Consistent with its ongoing silence regarding any screen-worn Omega for Skyfall, the latest update (as of October 5) provides no particulars about a James Bond watch that just sold for an impressive quarter-million dollars. No reference to its exclusive, bragging-rights co-axial technology.

And, more to the point: No reference to the fact that this titanium watch is, um, titanium.

Oversight? Strategy? Either way, as Lt Columbo might observe, it’s definitely a change in the way they normally conduct themselves, based on past examples.

I guess one could also focus on the increasing number of times we’re reading the word “the” when referring to this watch: “The” as in “the one and only Omega watch worn by James Bond in Skyfall“? “The” as in “the only Planet Ocean model Omega watch worn in Skyfall“? That first question would certainly be somethin’ for folks increasingly vocal in their speculation that collectors are in for an October surprise viz appearance of a Seamaster Aqua Terra in Skyfall.

But I’m still stuck on what to do with a stainless steel reference 232.30.42.21.01.001 Planet Ocean “James Bond” Omega — if none is to appear in the movie Skyfall.

For now, as they say on 007.com: “James Bond will return in 17 days, 11 hours, 10 minutes, 30 seconds”

i found this article interesting. there is speculation that a 42mm titanium was worn during skyfall HOWEVER omega links the SS 42mm PO on their website as THE bondwatch.
