"Coke" GMT with no crown guards!?
Evening everyone. I don't know much about vintage, but am trying to do some research and save my friend from making a big mistake in a hurry so thought i'd post here. He collects mostly vintage Omegas, but this "guy" has offered to sell him a vintage GMT, that really caught his eye. He sent me a cell phone photo of it and the first thing I noticed was it had a black-red bezel, faded but definitely a coke, and NO crown guards. That... just doesn't seem right to me. I am typing away on line like mad right now trying to find out but can anyone confirm the coke version came out WAY after the case adopted crown guards? I told my friend I would steer clear of this but of course this guy says it's a "limited time offer" (whatever the hell that means).
Any help is appreciated. |

Coke inserts were introduced in about 1983 with the first GMT-Master II, the 16760 Fat Lady. Crown guards came in late 50s with the 1675.

I'll post the pic he sent me tomorrow morning. Thanks Ex Pat, this whole deal just stunk from the start. When my friend told him about the Coke, this dude said that went it went to RSC it came back with a Coke bezel, they replaced it. I know that is BS. My friend is walking away. i am VERY relieved. Thanks again,

Sounds like it could be a 6542 that's had a sapphire coke insert glued into it... There's a slim possibility it might be a darkened/aged bakelite since the blue hemisphere can sometimes appear near black, but seeing as you say its def coke and FADED, it must be a jury-rigged 6542 w/ sapphire insert.

If the price is right,I would be happy to buy a 6542 with the wrong insert.A lot of the Bakelite bezel inserts have been changed over the Years.

I too have seen original inserts darken to almost black.
