007's Planet Ocean

I've noticed Daniel Craig sporting this Planet Ocean in Casino Royale and in the new Quantum of Solace...or is it the smaller 42mm version? It looks a bit smaller on his wrist than if it were a 45mm. Does anyone know? Does anyone have this watch or can you point me to a good review on it.

In any event, it is one helluva a tough looking watch and one I'm thinking about wearing myself.

It looks like the 42mm PO in QoS PR and trailers to most everyone. And yet the LE QoS PO is a 45.5mm PO. I might be wrong but I am leaning towards 45.5mm for QoS because the LE is 45.5mm and in CR he wore this size and the LE CR PO was also this size. Just my theory.

It has been confirmed by many WIS's at another watch forum, that it is indeed a 42mm PO.

I think you're right. These pictures from Casino Royale look like a 42mm PO with the rubber strap. Craig's appears to have a similar sized wirst to mine and 45mm would probably look like a saucer on a strap.

It really is a perfect watch for Bond. Understated and very rugged. It reminds me of when Connery wore the sub on the nato back in Goldfinger and Thunderball.

Sorry guys, but the watch Craig wore in CR was 45mm and was sold at the Omegamania auction from Antiquorum in 2007. It was lot 300. Here is the page that shows the sale:

In QOS Daniel Craig is wearing the 42mm PO with steel strap. I also think he will wear the new black SMP but as yet no pictures have been released that show him wearing this.

It sure was a 45mm. Must be the angle taken in the photo. I guess the only way to really tell is a straight down shot of it. What a rugged looking watch they sold, complete with dirt from 007's last mission. This looks like a very tough watch and seeing this, makes me really want one.

The easiest way I can tell the difference between the 45mm and 42mm PO's is by looking at the bezel. The bezel on the 45mm has a 'bottle cap' edge and the 42mm has a 'coin' edge.

45mm 'bottle cap' edge

42mm 'coin' edge

Also, the space between the date and the 3 o'clock hour marker is greater on the 45mm PO.

Here is a review comparing it to the SD:

If those watches are to scale, and they seem to be close due to the close sizes of each watch bands, then I'd never be able to distinguish between the two in a picture. I never noticed the differences in bezel edges and date marker distances so that gives me something to go on. I'd definitely have to see the two together. I feel more a preference toward the 42mm since I am used to 40mm. I wouldn't discount 45mm unless it looked oversized on my wrist.

That's a great article, and I understand his hesitance toward the 45mm size and the orange used on the watch. I'm not surprised at the high rating he gives it and have always believed that the quality differences between Rolex and Omega are in the mind of the owner.

The two pictures are not to scale, they are from Omega's website. When you see them both together you will notice the difference in size and the other things I mentioned.

You are right, they are not to scale. I went to see one tonight and they had both the 42 and 45mm with the steel bracelet. The 45mm is substantially larger and heavier, but surprisingly to me, it appealed to me and didn't look oversized on my wrist. It made my sub feel, well, insubstantial. I would really like to see it with the rubber strap as I really like the way it looks in the picture. I also like the matte dial and the somewhat retro look of the watch.

I definitely think it is a watch I could wear. As it is right now, I liked it better than any Rolex I've seen recently.

The Omega rubber strap for the PO is one of the nicest you can buy. It is soft and fits the watch perfectly! If you get a PO, 45mm or 42mm, I recommend buying it on a bracelet and getting the strap at the same time. You will not be disappointed.

I graduated from the divers institute in Seattle many moons ago, well before the fashion "orange bezels" And the reason the bezel is orange is not just for fashion. Believe it or not at depths of 300ft and greater that particular shade of orange is the only color in the spectrum that is visible through the divers bell" or helmet while arch welding at those depths.. the weld arch throws off a high blue arc....similar if you where to stare at the sun...that orange is still visible at those depths for the diver to see his time and limits.

I do remember a dive teacher tell me that many years ago who wore a Doxa for that reason. I thought it was a cool watch then just because of that. I think it's a cool watch now because Dirk Pitt wears one.

I seem to remember hearing that somewhere also. Thanks for the reminder.
