Opinions please. Submariner 5512 or 5513

Looking to add an older submariner to my collection.

Should I be going for a 5512 or 5513?

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi Eric,
By “older” do you mean matte dial or gilt?
The 5512 was made in fewer numbers and harder to find. Thus I think you’ll find a bit of a premium for a 5512. As always go for the best example within your budget and be patient. Sadly prices in this market are crazy and being a buyer is a challenge.
Cheers

Many thanks for the input.

I guess I'm looking for something without the white gold chapter rings.

Seems like some of the later 5513's adopted the chapter rings which shrinks the hour markers a little.

I quite like the earlier markers like the pic below. This is all a bit of a minefield and nowhere near as easy as buying new in box (which I know is not easy either lol).

Forgot to say I'm not looking for anything thats been bashed to hell. I prefer minty but original. I don't even mind a light polish tbh.

That one looks good at first glance, but more photos are needed from different angle to fully evaluate it. Appealing dial, hands, bezel, and case.

The pic you posted is a gilt dial underline pointed crown guard and is pretty much top
of the line. Amazing piece if the budget stretches that far. Spend some time learning the differences of models through the years and see how what you like matches your budget.

Most folk into vintage prefer the models which predates the gloss dials with white gold surrounds. These are not chapter rings - this refers to the ring around the perimeter of the dial. The chapter ring can be either closed (very early models) or open (later models from around 1962). The earliest models are gilt and gloss, followed by matte with white print, followed by gloss gloss with white print.

Best of luck. The education and the hunt is all part of the fun.
