5167 dial question
As you can guess, I'm considering this one. I read how the dial is chameleon like and shimmers, etc. Basically, a lot of praise of this dial.
Well, I saw a 5164 yesterday as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 5167; however, I didn't find the dial all that chameleon or shimmery. It seem very matte and muted to me. Case finish, amazing. Movement, amazing. Hand size, PERFECT. dial, ok. This is not mean to be a bash to the aquanaut, but more of a "what am I missing here?" You guys are smart guys. Was the lighting bad or something? Does it change with the light in the day? My LVc changes with a turn, I didn't experience that with the 5164. Maybe the dial has more going on with the 5164 complication that takes away from the dial simplicity and "shimmer". Thoughts?

I can only speak for the 5167 but I can assure you that the dial is simply amazing. Donīt worry.

I think its easier to see with the clean dial 5167 for sure.
The dial certainly looks different under different lighting. And also shows much more on the 5711 than on the 5712. You will love the dial of the 5167 I assure you. Summer look, that dial bursts, and the rubber bracelet is so comfortable. I didn't pick it because it didn't feel as special as the 5711 to me. I found that the 5167 looks very ordinary at night, especially when dressed up. The 5711 still works incredibly. Oh and in an ideal world I would be able to justify both - I simply can't do that. Looking forward to an incoming thread!! |

It was probably just the lighting at the AD. The 5164/5167 do have sunburst dials.

Returning from the grocery store I just took another photo in the evening sun - just for you.
Somethingīs must have been wrong while you were checking it out - either with the watch, the lighting or your eyes. And now letīs see an incoming thread... |

did you try the thing on in a darkroom? this dial rocks 5167 > 5164 for the cleaner effect. both those watches rock.

I don't know. It just didn't look great. As I study the dial as well, the number finish just seems a little off. 10, 2 and 9.

5167 dial question
IMHO, the dial is sensational and ranges from the dark gray too a brownish hue depending on light. Looks much better outdoors but hard to capture photographically, at least for me

Chris is right, get it out in the sun, or at least by the AD's window to see it at its best. As for numbers, they are raised and they can look strange, all depends on angle on lighting.

I think the dial execution trumps both the finishing and the movement on my 5167

The dial is the best thing about this watch. I do find it dull sometimes but then it pops at the right angle or light.
Hope this helps. Cheers Anuj Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Maybe its the plastic liner and the light refraction but in addition to the above comments I also think the number 4 is not as crisp as the other 5164 pics here in this thread. If this watch is at an AD then I would not worry, then its pretty sure to be the pic/plastic. These dials do have a sunburst and imo are just as nice as the one I have on my naut. |

The most important is what you feel, it is a lot of money to just settle, in my mind it has to be awesome or move to the next one

After seeing all these great 67 shots I think my quest to flip and own a 5164 have ended.

I would pass on it if you're heart isn't in it Mik but as I've said before, you'd make out OK if you buy right and decide to flip later

Buddy Mik!
I am so glad you got to give it a test drive. Three points: 1) There is sunburst effect but only with stronger lighting. You see some here: 2) The more important point and as Chris had mentioned, the watch has to WOW you. Regardless of its popularity, the watch has to rock your boat when you have it on the wrist and sing to you($17K can do a lot of things in life to wow you many times over). Perhaps try on the smurf too and see it that sings to you more? Tricky part is these GOTCHA moments don't always come on day one. 5164 was ok when I tried it on initially but after owning it for a few months, I was like man.. this is an amazing watch. On the other hand and after owning the 5711 for a month, I realized it was not for me. Different stroke for different folks so it is all good. 3) Note 5167 case thickness is closer to 5711 and it is much thinner than the 5164. Please see Mike's previous post for comparison: It is your hard earned dollar so definitely go about it your way! Fred |

Sounds like you should def hold off Mik. Although the dial is top notch and easily my favorite part of the 5167
