Omega Planet Ocean 2201.50.00

Hello Forum!

I am glad to see that Omega has its own discussion subforum on this marvellous website.

I was wondering if anyone could answer to this simple question:

When did the Planet ocean (model 2201.50.00) been released? i mean the year..

By the way, does anybody know when will Omega be likely to release a new version of it?

I confess i do not now much things about watches, but this Omega do look stunning, aint it?!

Thank you so much in advance

Hi, I have no idea when the PO was officially released, but recently there was a LM (Liquid Metal) limited edition of 1948 pieces.

According to the Omega CEO, the PO should be receiving a new in-house movement and to be shown at Basel 2011.

The Planet Ocean was introduced in 2005.

And yes, that is a nice looking PO.

Beautiful looking PO you've got there !

Yes, and Fr. John as said, the Planet Ocean was released in 2005.

Speaking of which, when did Omega stop putting the blue tint on the Crystal ?
I bought my PO from Fr. John's AD last June and mine DOES have the blue tint to it, so it had to be recently.

It's been said that the PO will be replaced within the next three years with a new version with the 8500. Apparently Omega is currently working on remastering the PO case design to accommodate the larger 8500 caliber.

Thank you all for the replys!

So, the model i posted above (in the foto) was released in 2005.. that was quite a long time!

Is there any information about the price of the new model ?

One final question:

Do you guys think it will be worth it to wait till it wil be released (likely 1 more year..) as i already have the actual PO ?

Once again, thank you so much

I would buy now. You can get them for well under 2k on the forums today. I love mine. I have a the 42mm black bezel with white indices. I wear mostly with the rubber strap, which looks great. Originally I didn't want the orange bezel, but wish I had the orange version now. Does anyone know if you can get a bezel replacement for this watch?

Thanks,

Aaron

You can get used ones for under $2000. I just old my 9 month old for $1900. It had 15 months of warranty left. Try searching in the for sale section of this forum and also watchuseek. Good luck. This watch was one of the best I've ever owned. It is super accurate.

By the way does anyone know how much would it cost me brand new?
I know i could find some top deals in the internet, but i would prefer to buy it in an AD as it is meant to be a gift.

Any information concerning discount rates would be terrific too!

You guys rock!

The retail price is $3950. Most Omega ADS give 30%-40% off discounts so the PO can be had for $2370-$2765 so not too bad of a depreciation hit.

I'm waiting for my orange bezel to arrive. I have enough black bezel watches, and looking for a change. Mine has the white numbers, so i'm curious how it will look with the orange bezel.

Just got offered a 15% discount on a brand new PO 45.5!

Is that good, or still low for an average deal?

Got my 42mm PO 2901.50.91 several weeks ago. After wearing my GMT for quite a while I decided to go for something a bit lighter in weight. Got my PO with the rubber band to save some $$ as well. Very comfortable watch and a lot easier to read than my GMT, (I have to agree that the wave pattern on the GMT dial can be a tad distracting). I felt that Omega missed the mark a bit with the SS bracelet on the PO... especially when compared to the bracelet on the GMT, (IMHO one of the best designs I've ever seen on a watch).

Are you on drugs Mr. 62 posts? I've had close-up photos of my GMT on this website on several ocassions, and no one has ever accused me of posting pics of FAKES! If they were why would I be posting pics of them on a web-site that has some of the most knowledgable watch afficiatatos in the world. You better think twice before making these type of accusations, or perhaps you should be contacted by a Mod concerning this issue? You've got some balls and no brains!

Please look at the crazy feet on the Omega logo on the PO. Then look at the swiss made lettering on the bottom of the dial and compare it to the lettering on a PO at the Omega homepage. The crystal seems to lack AR-coating completely and the indices on the dial are too bold. The bezel looks off too with numbers to close to the insert edge (if you get the picture).

The GMT seems off regarding the endlinks and the dial just seems odd.

Joseph, i had a quick look at the dial of my 42mm and i can see a few slight differences. im not sure if there are different versions of dials for the PO models...

maybe Mr. 62 should've have worded better or PM instead, especially with the recent episode of that 16610.... (imo - the low # of posts does not mean he/she is less knowledgable on the subject)

hope this will not cause any problems

I did check Omega's web-site, and I will say that if that photo is indicative of ALL PO's than I do have a problem. However, my first reaction was to wonder exactly what you stated in regards to the location of the "swiss made" lettering. As far as my GMT... I posted a reply, (including close-ups) to a thread regarding members trying to repair their own watches, (which I did with my GMT's dial). If you look closely at the 12 o'clock hour markers you'll notice a defect on the left edge of the left marker. That's glue "squeeze out" that occured after having to reset it in place. It dislodged itself after having dropped it on my tiled kitchen floor. All four hands also needed to be reset. As far as the end links seeming "off" this is because I have a rather small wrist. After sizing the bracelet I did noticed the edges of the links just below the end links were rather prominent. I'm no watch maker, nor am I the greatest photographer, but accusing someone on an open forum of posting pics of fakes crosses a very thin line IMHO. And yes, I would have certainly been willing to discuss these issues with the gentleman from Sweden if he had the tact to PM me. In any event, I'd like to thank you for your comments and photo. And please don't worry... I'm not the type to hold grudges.

At the risk of dragging another member into the fray, if I'm not mistaken Omega only uses AR coating on one side of the crystal rather than both sides as most "higher-end" manufacturers do. Perhaps this is why they may appear to be lacking this feature. Just my No offense intended.

Omega uses AR coating on both sides of the PO crystal. Early Planet Ocean crystals had a coating with a bluish tint and was not very durable.

Earlier this year, the coating was improved so as to eliminate the bluish tint and be more durable.

The PloProf 1200 and newer Planet Oceans have the new coating (not) seen here on the Liquidmetal:

30% is not unheard of in the US.
