Sort of ironic since it’s the original version of the EII was on Everest.

The second hand market has really gotten pricey on the explorer ii. Plenty of love just not enough supply. I had one for a year and moved on but it was an awesome daily watch never skipped a beat just a little too big for me.

it is nice, but I find it too large. I believe had things been the opposite with the larger one released first, the 40mm would have been a big hit ala Tudor 58.

Picture buyers ...that's the problem .Lazy brains making a call without seeing it in the metal .

Had the previous generation polar ...found it small and flat .The Rolex I had for the shortest time .
Pics of the Polar 42mm didnt inspire me much..orange hand and all .

Then, saw the Polar 42mm in the metal at an AD ... BOOM !!! ...bought it on the spot !

There are sooooooo many, "its too big" comments on here, lol.

Here you go guys....does this fit, is this small enough for you? Gosh 40mm already looks silly enough on any wrist under 6 inches by modern standards.

For goodness sakes almost 2020...., but you'd think 42mm to some on this forum is like wearing something like this, shesh!!!

[/url]

Here is a quick symmetry guide. Again, unless you have tiny 5" wrists 42mm is not that much, please.

I tend to think it’s actually gaining momentum as of recent. I can’t recall there being so many threads on the daily discussing it and giving it the attention it deserves. Just scooped mine up yesterday and I’m in love

I think the new case shape is less pleasing to the eye than the 40 and the orange is less versatile than the older red. I'd wear the old, but the 42 does nothing for me. I'm kinda anti-cyclops so will probably never buy either.

I'm 6'2", 225 and the 42mm is just perfect. Had the 16570 years ago, but with the hollow endlinks and the tinny bracelet, it was a no-go for me. I've been spoiled by robust sizes and substantial clasps. Plus, while cartoonish to some, the orange GMT hand is a perfect tribute to the 1655.

Great to travel with, swim with it in the ocean,...perfect for everyday wear being that it's so versatile, polar or black. It won't clash with any outfit you have planned.

Love the Explorer II but at 42mm it simply is too big for me.

Massive improvements over the 5 digit, they should have never messed with the size.

I really like the polar but find the new size a bit unbalanced. It's already popular I think it would go astronomical if they released a ceramic bezel version.

With the updated dial design, yes, 39-40mm would’ve been a homerun!

Th Polar is the watch that got me into Rolex. I was looking for another Breitling or Omega and came across this and said "I must have it!" - then realized it was very hard to get.

Bought the DSSD, which is great, then finally got a call on the 216570 and I'm super happy. It's everything I hoped it was.

So, yeah, man. There's tons of love for this watch. Maybe not mass-market everyday-watch-buyer, but so what? Chances are on the street 10:10 people couldn't even tell you what model Rolex you're wearing anyway.

You also have to keep in mind that the iconic Sub is at the same price point, actually cheaper with no-date, so you won't win that battle ever. The Sub won't be dethroned, or ever less-desirable than it is now - it's a classic.

If Rolex were to make the EXP2 a $6k watch it'd be a hell of a lot more popular than it is now, and anyone that says it's ugly, well, I can't help them. It may be a touch too big for some, but ugly it isn't, though admittedly the orange hand isn't for everyone.

It's only the "42mm" part that stops me from buying a black dialed one.

I bought the black dial version.

It’s a handsome watch, wears very flat on the wrist which I like, has the super maxi dial, the best lume of any Rolex by far and is the easiest dial to read of any watch. I also love the phantom hands evident on the black dial version.

The only reason I didn’t go polar was that I just can’t get past the all black painted hands or black lume plots. If Rolex has kept those in white gold on the polar version I’d of been very tempted.

It’s far from being an unpopular watch. It stands as one of the last remaining true Rolex tool watches that hasn’t been touched by the ceramic bezel change and I think it’s all the better for it. I hope they don’t change it to a ceramic bezel in future releases.

Most don’t see a Rolex tool watch as being worthy unless it has a ceramic bezel, to my eye that’s the one main reason the Explorer 2 is overlooked, but it has a strong following none the less.

2mm is the same thickness as most coins, hardly discernible in feel on the wrist. The lack of a rotating bezel assembly enables the dial to be proportionally larger than a Submariner, which gives the perception of a large watch, which in reality it isn’t.

I'm just happy to see any Explorer get some love. Truly, they are my favorite of the professional line. The Sub and Daytona is great, but the Explorer is a confident, quiet cool.
