Any vintage experts? Considering the Flightmaster

I remember seeing the Flightmaster in the shop when I purchased my first ever watch, the Seiko 6139. I was 14, and saved up 95 dollars to buy it (got it at cost, my uncle owned the shop). That was the watch that started it all. (Damm expensive hobby! ). Anyway, I have always admired the Flightmaster from afar, and am seriously considering getting one. The thing I do not understand is the difference in the dials between the first and second version. What do those dials (at the 9:00) actually indicate?

Many thanks,

I agree it's a fantastic reference, Paul. Wish I had bigger wrists because the thing is a beast. Hope you find everything you need on the links below. Cheers.

OK, Call me a Dorklehead, but I still don’t get it. On the early version, how (what) does the dial at 9:00 indicate?

Not an expert but in my opinion that is a very cool looking watch. Being a childhood memory, I would go for it.

The version with the half green sub dial is a 24 hour dial.

The all black sub dial is an independent sub second dial that runs at all times.

Sorry I didn't read to the end but they sounded reasonable.
