Ford v Ferrari

Watched the movie last night. I read an article that they hired some "car guy" who worked for 7 months prior to the shoot to get all the cars lined up and to do it right. Early in the movie, Shelby is driving a Porsche 356 and he starts the engine with an ignition key on the right side of the steering column. Really????

It lost me right there. It's lack of details like this that are unforgivable in a serious car movie.

Mangold isn’t a gear head, he admitted it in interviews. It was a good film nonetheless.

I hate it when that happens, lack of attention to details.

My wife is throwing flags all the time when we watch Greys Anatomy. She was once a nurse.

I scream at photography movies about how something is done or shown.

I get your disappointment about attention to detail on stuff regarding what the show/movie is actually supposedly about.

Artistic license or bad preparation. I feel a bit cheated although 99% of people would never notice.

It’s not that serious. Hollywood movies “based” on real life events don’t make them an example of the exact real life events. It’s not a history channel documentary.
To dissect that one minuscule detail you’d then have to continue digging, Shelby didn’t drive Ford on a demo nor did the cars finish exactly online at the same time, and there were way more people involved in the car’s development that went unnamed.
It’s Hollywood, a movie, just meant to entertain and tell “about a” story, once upon a time. It’s not meant to tell “thee” story, if you know what I mean.

As a military guy I would literally walk out of every movie involving things that go pew pew, and don’t get me started on the uniforms. It’s just a movie, I go with the intention of “are you not entertained!!!!!!” And that’s all.
I thought it was an awesome movie, just like Star Wars where they base everything on an imaginary force that people feel.

Want reality, history channel, nat geo.

I'm sure this is EXTREMELY noticeable to military/ex.

I always frowned at mortar shells landing 5 feet from someone and throwing up dirt and the people being just fine. C'mon it's not a fire cracker, it fires shrapnel for 50 yards.

Anyways I can imagine guys in the military shaking their heads.

Being a paramedic and having worked in ERs, this issue is really bad. But I just go with the flow, I disconnect from reality and treat it just like any other fictional movie like Terminator or the Matrix. Just there to be amused not critique or judge, although for fun I point things out at home if anyone seems interested, no one usually cares though, I get the “yes dad, we know, it’s just a movie.”

Omg, yes that exactly. A 60mm mortar round will eff things up for a solid 40 meters. It’s comically ridiculous lols.

To get really good laughs on the extreme of reality I only have to say three words
Fast and Furious.
Totally legit.

I'm being overly dramatic about this, but as a car guy it makes me crazy. What a great story though. Sad that Ken Miles didn't get the win at Le Mans.

My wife an I enjoyed it immensely.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. I find it makes life so much more enjoyable.

Agree. Sad story. I didn’t know the details. It hurt to watch. Read a bunch a hit it afterwards.

I'm no Porsche expert but a quick google search/images seem to suggest ignition is on the right side on the 356 (LHD) ??

I saw the movie and it was pointed out to me ( rather obvious) that drivers don’t look at other drivers in a race for a relatively long time when passing them by as if to taunt them. It was a good solid movie. Very conventional mainstream Hollywood. Not exactly the most original movie in the world. But good escapism for a couple hours.

Nice movie. I think Matt Damon was wearing a Heuer and that makes a lot of sense.

100% this! ^^^

Artistic license and it's about being entertained which the movie did in spades.

I saw it in the theater with my dad also a big car guy and last night on cable with the wife. She enjoyed it which I figured she would. It's more than just car races and has a solid story line.

Two thumbs up!

This is a replica speedster as was the one in the movie.

Gotcha. But Hollywood makes a lot of movies like this since I can’t even remember. “Rocky” with a twist. Overcoming adversity/ underdog. Again, good movie...but I’d rather see things I haven’t seen a lot of. It’s the kind of movie, for me, that I immediately forget about as soon as I leave the theater ( except when we’re discussing details like in this thread) . Now, that’s not necessarily bad. People want well executed escapist entertainment for two hours— with a true story or not. And that’s what they get.

Ohhh....I know, I know...
And the BFH Ken wields at the track during the flick’s opening SCCA race was not an authentic 1960’s BFH.

Sure, you’re right about where an actual 356 had its ignition switch in those days as well as 911’s did later.

But - Ford wins and Miles is screwed out of his top step on the podium. The Deuce was a jerk along with his legion of corporate suits.

As to the details, unless you were one of these two guys, we’ll never know.
