“Adding to the collection” and other euphemisms

Have you noticed how some people (on this forum) use words and phrases like “add so-and-so watch”, “adding to the collection”, and “parting with” instead of saying “buying” and “selling”?

I've also noticed some people use yet other words like "procure", "acquire", "obtain", "move", "unload" and "flip" instead of "buy" and "sell".

It's a rich and varied language we use.

Why didn't you just write "selling off some of my collection!"

It’s called language and we have our own sociolects here. I think it builds community, can create empathy and can allow us to mentally deal with this crazy hobby. “Buy” and “sell” are pretty simple, direct terms but “pull the trigger” or “let go” can help the speaker deal with feelings about a watch purchase or sale. I love the esoteric terminology around watches in general. My young kids know all the terms and use them correctly….much to my satisfaction.

A buddy of mine refers to his collection as a “small gathering.” I find that much more charming than “collection.”

I have my opinions on ‘piece’ but the worst is ‘the wife’.

Even my dog is called ‘my dog’ or ‘buddy’.

At the prices most of these trade hands at, I feel like there's justification in articulating the purchase of a timepiece versus, say, buying some milk.

I personally love the phrase "add it to my collection" as "my collection" references all the eclectic purchases I've made in life. There was a member here who had an amazing collection of random goods and it sort of inspired me to do the same(along with American pickers and pawn stars) so I rather like the language.

It could just be because I'm a hipster antique dealer though and I feel like language can make or break a sale when its really just useless junk that was expensive in its day lol

I'm a fan of euphemisms and the richness and colorfulness of language.

I find them fascinating and at times comical, and sometimes they are even dehumanizing.(e.g. collateral damage)

Every profession creates their own language, and most countries have their own idiomatic versions of English that often gets melted into other countries.

Since Covid I've been watching a ton of foreign language TV shows with subtitles and its funny to hear another language being spoken and then an English phrase throw in (which I guess is because it doesn't translate well, and because most of these countries also speak English to some extent.)

Was watching something in German the other night and the guy was talking and it was a German sentence but with the English "work-life balance" in the sentence. Or the F-word thrown into a sentence from Sweden or Dutch show.

I once worked with a guy who spoke a lot of languages and when he conversed in a different language with a native speaker his body language would change with each language.

Anyways language fascinates me.

I can't think of a single other hobby where those terms are not used.

Even stock traders speak of adding.

You are building or maintaining a collection...what else would it be called?

I think we need to clarify the definition of euphemism.

eu·phe·mism
/ˈyo͞ofəˌmizəm/

noun: euphemism; plural noun: euphemisms

a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.

"“downsizing” as a euphemism for cuts"

Same. I’m one of those guys.

One of the best lines in a movie was in Lord of War.

Baptiste - “Lord of War”

Yuri - that’s “War Lord”

Baptiste - “I prefer it my way”
