Grey deal stocks
Just saw a grey dealer posting these pictures on FB. I know this topic came up many times before...But seeing these pic make me feel sorry for an average guy (like myself) just want to get one SS model.

Yep, sucks for average joes like us who have to play the waiting game to get one at MSRP. Reminds me of the picture of all the new Pepsis one grey had while my AD hasn't even gotten the first one yet!

The best part is it’s says “new arrived”. If they truly just received all those pieces then it just takes it to the next level.

That’s a crazy amount of hot watches. Not sure how smart it is advertising that on a public platform though!

Such a shame. This can be stopped but obviously Rolex benefits by also having an outlet for their less popular models and therefore is not inclined to intervene. For Rolex, sales are sales.
They must be assessing the risk of alienating retail buyers as they become frustrated with lack of availability for some models BUT buyers must still be driving sales in ADs and boutiques of non sports models so they leave the system alone. |

Its like a complete parallel universe - the Explorer is more scarce than the “readily-available” white Daytona

Its a plain and simple fact while there are those willing to pay crazy money for Rolex watches. And if it is advertised via the various forums on the net what they are asking and getting, most of the hard to get at retail Rolex watches will end up in the grey market.

AD's like this deal because it doesn't matter who they sell the watch to. A sale is a sale. Sure they're pissing off average customers like us. And one day, the tide will turn when the Rolex bubble has burst, and you'll be able to get discounts off Rolex professional SS watches on the grey market. AD's will feel the pain. |

Maybe you got this impression because many AD's in Europe are filled with Chinese tourists. Yes, they might be the largest group of tourists and they do buy hot SS models, but so do everyone else. |

Once again, let's direct our anger to Rolex SA. They are the real guilty party in this. The greys are just doing what they have always done.

Is it just me, or does it make sense that a dealer would have that many on hand?
If their goal is selling Rolexes then it appears they have a poor “close the deal” ratio - else there wouldn’t be that much on hand. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

It's amazing, I follow some gray dealers in Instagram and everyday they show the new arrivals, they have all the "hot" models and more than one of each.
I have bought from some trusted sellers here, one of them on his website has 220+ Rolexes today... So, Rolex reduces supply, ADs sell at full price to the grays, customers buy at a premium from the grays, how is this good for anybody? Ok the AD makes full margin, that's good, but why could't they sell to final customers with no discount? I'm sure we'd be happy to pay full price at the AD instead of a premium on a website. The real winners here are the gray dealers, is this sustainable?

Average Joe here.....
Sad to see these excessive stocked grey dealers since I still cant get anything (on several long lists at five different places for several watches). BUT....I understand business. I just don't like it. |

So if I understand this correctly: ADs are now selling all of their SS stock to greys, who are in turn selling to the public at a huge mark up. When and why did this begin? Why did ADs decide to start selling all of their SS stock directly to gray dealers?

Wonder how many ADs will remain in business and who may or may not be left holding excessive stock, once the smoke clears.

I agree with all the posts on the subject. The gray market is really taking away from the opportunity for a large number of new SS buyers to enter the market. The gray sellers are having fun this time around. Excellent thread. |

Although the Grey dealers buy lots of watches direct from AD’s, many are also purchased directly from individuals that bought at MSRP and are flipping to the Grey’s to make quick buck.

I wonder how much of that is going on? That might be bigger than people think.

Most AD's have waiting lists on watches... who gets to be atop those lists? Those that have spent the most with the store. As an AD myself, I can tell you that we've severed relationships with established "clients" after learning... sometimes months or years later... that they are flipping their purchases. But this can be difficult to police, unless in the OP's case, they share it all over social media. |
