It's rude to the host because wearing a watch indicates that your time is more important than interacting with them.

This is how I was taught so I could never wear one but nowadays it seems the opposite. The bigger and flashier the better, contradicting with everything black tie is all about.

I always laugh in silence seeing that. Ceramic bezels and Oyster bracelets, the horror.

Guess I forgot to move up to 2020

It's a free world so if you must, a nice three hander only on black leather.

Black tie now is all about the watch and the shoes. For me, i would want to wear a Newman Daytona or maybe even a rainbow. I feel like the rainbow is out there for everyone to know what it is but the Newman is so under the radar, but still insane.

Rainbow Daytona, purple dinner jacket and bespoke velvet slippers with some decadent gold embroidery. Etiquette straight out of the door

This would be reason enough for me to not go. I don't need to listen to them telling everyone how to live, while they do what they criticize others of doing in a double standard. These type of events while seemingly have a good cause, are just networking events at best. Now if a celebrity happens to be there for a cause they believe in, that's something different than if an event searches for celebrities for celebrities sake.

Nothing too crazy - Calatrava 5196 (any of them) or something Vacheron. No metal bracelets. JLC Reverso close third.

Edit - HA! I noticed I already responded this a while back (I chose the same then too).

Well in the real world I would doubt if any black tie event whatever that is, would care whatever watch anyone was wearing. Its the person at the event not any watch after all watches there only function is to tell the time nothing more. And by wearing a expensive watch does this make the person better than a person at one of these black tie events wearing a inexpensive watch say a Timex.
