5070R vs 3970J
Pick one of the above please.
- I’ll be trading my dear 5170j for it. - I’ve already got a 5070j which I love. Is two 5070s daft? - I hanker after a Grand Comp and the 3970 fits the bill but the 5070 is more beautiful to my eyes. - I’m indifferent to size. 36mm or 42mm doesn’t matter to me. - Either watch will be worn all the time. I don’t subscribe to the view that a “dress watch” is to be worn formally PS. Finally, please don’t suggest any Nautilus/Aquanaut, I’m not on Instagram (and I’ve got my fill of them already too) |

If you've got a large enough wrist, I'd go 5070r all day

I usually favor diversity within a collection and would therefore go 3970.
I think the 5070 J and R are close enough to tip the balance toward the 3970. Both choices are beautiful and represent classic Patek IMHO |

I respect the 5070 tremendously, but my heart says the 3970 by a mile.

I struggle with the smaller details on the 3970 dial. I will go for the 5970 or 5270 if I'm after a PCC.
I'm also not a fan of the 5070, as the proportion of the front and back bezels looks off to me. Prefer the cleaner and single railway track of the 5170. If I'm in your position, I will consider selling both the 5070 and 5170 to get either the 5970 or 5270. |

3970...it is such a great piece, it will always be a legacy watch worth having. You didn't ask but the 'in between' answer in my opinion .... is the 5970, but it likely would run 30-40% more than a 3970 so it obviously changes the equation.
I came close to buying the 5270 (I asked for the 100th time in a thread 5270 vs 5970), the over whelming answer was to try them on...I'm really glad I did. It was a struggle with our restricted times but I managed to try on a 3970, 5970, and 5270...for me it became obvious (like a click) that the 5970 was for me so I adjusted to that plan. If you are ok with 41mm which it sounds like you are given the 42mm 5070...also in the category of you didn't ask.. the 5270P Salmon is really nice and seems to be highly available on the secondary market or at a decent discount at an AD, for me it was too big...but to pay it forward...try it on and you likely will know. |

3970 all day everyday. 5070 is a floored design in my eyes.

For a PCC, the 3970 is a great value watch and reasonably priced. The proportion of thickness vs diameter is not optimal and is better on its replacements, the 5970 and 5270.
Still I would recommend the 3970 over getting a second 5070. I also find the proportions of the 5070 a bit off compared to its replacement the 5170. As always, my recommendation is to try on the watches on the wrist before making a purchase. |

I will go for the PP3970. This is a Patek classic.
