Casual footwear...

Right chaps, need some shoe advice! I’m generally good at picking outfits, but useless at picking footwear! If it’s not a smart shoe or a Chelsea boot, then I’m hopeless, literally, zero hope!

Need to refresh my footwear collection, to wear with shorts, jeans, chinos, linen, anything casual basically.

Please help with brands and pictures!

To numerous to name them all but a few I would recommend with regards to good quality footwear.

Oakstreet Bootmakers, Rancourt, Quoddy, Whites Boot Co, Truman Boot Co, Viberg, Carmina, Rider Boot Co, Alden, Crockett and Jones, Edward Green, G&G, John Lobb, Saint Crispins.

Others of course but the ones above would be the ones I would choose from.

Check out Harry’s of London. If you’re after smart, yet comfortable sneakers they are the best I’ve found.

Not branded on the outside either which is a plus.

Great materials, longevity and quality.

Chaco sandals are the greatest for warm weather.

I've also owned tevas and birkenstocks. Issue with tevas is they tend to leave bad blisters and are made of cheaper materials. Birkenstocks are nice but they get smelly fast (especially if they get wet at all) and the corks and soles start to degrade after just a couple years of wear. They get grungy way too quickly for the price imo. I got tired of replacing mine every 2-3 years because I felt like a hobo in them.

Can't say enough about chacos, I've had one of my pairs for 5+ years and they still look new when I wash them off- there is essentially zero wear on the soles still. A cousin of mine has had a pair for 20+ years and they also look like they could be from this year. I don't know how they do it but they're extremely rugged. I own the heavier z mega cloud and I use them for hiking in Montana and Wyoming in the summer for longer hikes of 5+ miles. The arch support is incredible for a sandal. Also have a pair of the lighter z cloud 2's which are better for shorter walks and everyday wear. Chaco also has some pretty incredible customer service- you can get any part of your sandals replaced if they somehow get worn down or damaged.

Have several pair and love them all.

Check out there sandal selector tool on their website to determine which sandal would be best for the width of your foot and arch. I am a narrow and flat footbed fan.

Olukai are the best sandals I have ever owned. Living in Florida they’re part of our culture. These are outstanding. Incredible arch support and they hold up very well. (Don’t mind the small holes, they’re burns from welding slag).

I’m a big fan of Common Projects leather sneakers. Italian made , high quality leather, comfortable and pretty hard wearing.

I have them in white, black and brown and for casual wear as you’ve described they seem to cover all bases.

My favorite casual summer footwear - Sperry Topsiders, Chaco sandals and Olukai flip flops. I used to have Birkenstocks ages ago and I do remember how comfortable they were. I need to get another pair.

I think plain white sneakers are a staple and look great at any age. Either some Adidas Stan Smiths, Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops, or Converse Jack Purcell low-tops. These look great with shorts, chinos and jeans.

Clarks desert boots are a veritable classic for wearing with jeans and chinos.

I would avoid runners (unless at the gym), flip-flops/thongs (unless at the beach), and espadrilles like the abovementioned Toms (for that vibe, get a decent loafer instead).

Another vote for Olukai - best flips I've ever worn. I have 3 of them - black, brown, and grey. They're my go to in the Spring Summer.

Other than that I like the Adidas NMD for a casual sneaker or for a more dressed look I like Vince.

I wear leather boat shoes quite a bit. Or some basic tennis shoes like the white ones someone posted a couple posts above.

In the subject of boat shoes don’t buy Sperrys, you pay 2x as much for the name and the quality is lesser than other brands that offer similar or the same shoes. (Timberland)

If your looking for good quality boat shoes which are even resolvable I just have to mention once again Rancourt, Quoddy, and Oakstreet Bootmakers. Besides if you get the right sole it will be awhile before they need to even be resoled. Ranger Mocs are another option as well which all three sell. They cost a bit more than Sperry but then again you get what you pay for. I recommend using shoe trees and using Bick4 Leather treatment as necessary.

I know disposable is the new norm but if you take care of them they will last you and look good for decades. Nothing beats a good quality leather shoe.
