I have attached an image of a Lady's Rolex Datejust that I purchased for my wife over 30 years ago at Tiffany's. It has a gold bezel and 2 gold stips on the bracelet. She has not worn it for a very long time. Is it worth the cost to send to Rolex for service? It does run but ultimately fails to keep time. Small nick on the crystal. I don't know the value f this watch so I am undecided if I should send it to Rolex which will be at least $1,000 or to a non-Rolex repair shop

It's hard to answer these "is it worth the service cost" questions without context. What is your endgame? The value of the watch doesn't have much impact on the service cost, why does it matter to you? Does the watch have great sentimental value? Would your wife like to wear it for another 30 years? Or is she pretty much done with it (tastes change, after all)?

You keep asking the same questions about this watch.

If it's not working and you want to keep it, fix it. Almost any Rolex is worth more than it's repair costs, so it is seldom a throw-away item.

Any decent CW-21 qualified watchmaker can service a Rolex movement.

Do not send an old Rolex to a Rolex Service Center.

When / if you make up your mind, contact one of the CW21 Ridley's. One is in Texas and his son is in Arizona.

You can talk with them and get the straight info. They are both Vintage Rolex experts.

As a fact - Rolex often get passed on from gen to gen. Is that a desire for you?

We do not want to sell it but my wife prefers other watches. We will probably have it repaired and give it to one of our daughters. It has no sentimental value to either of us other than it's something we purchased many years ago and in this respect would like to keep it in the family.

Unless you already have a relationship with a watchmaker that you know can repair the watch, then the path of least resistance is obviously to send it to Rolex. It just depends how much effort you're willing to put into potentially saving a few hundred USD for what will probably be a one-off job. For people who have 10+ watches repaired each year, the price difference can add up.

Sutter's Watch Repair, in Chicago, is an independent Rolex Service Center. They should have all the parts needed, and the expertise.
