One issue I have had with fancy engraved case backs is that my wrist can swell during the day, and I am left with an impression of the case back on my wrist, which can sometimes be irritating to my skin.

I used to wonder the same thing. Now I have watches with clear case back as well as artwork on case back. Couldn’t care less about either. In fact I so don’t see and care about case backs so much that sometimes I surprise myself ‘ oh wow, I forgot, you can see the inside on this one’ and then it goes on my wrist and I forget about it for the next many months.

I actually like the Rolex approach now: “Nothing to see here. Move on. “

Of course seeing finely finished movements inside ALS, Patek, Montblanc, etc. Is like looking at art. But I don’t need to see unfinished movement.

The last thing they need is another crown logo. I vote to leave it alone, less is more in this case(back).

It's a surface that may be personalized. Folks here would be able to put their favorite currency symbol on the back!

I think the case back is a thing of beauty; it provides the best for water resistance which IMHO is the purpose of it. Many, like backs that allow a view of the movement but imho that's a problem for water resistance. Not to mention Rolex doesn't put a lot of effort into decorating their movements. Yes there are plenty of case backs with engraving on them but only on a few Rolex watches; I'm fine with that. I've gotten rid of many such watches and their associated case backs. I still maintain my Rolex collection!!! This is just a case (back) of, "more is less."

Rolex is Rolex much like Cornflakes. Consistency, for better or for worse is what the brand is about. There are other brands that can spice up your needs as they are better at doing it anyway.

Just a thought. Would a clear case back make it easier to validate authenticity without having to remove the case back?

I like them either way. Can't say I don't enjoy the clean brushed metal surface... But I also enjoy the stunning engravings on the 1st and 2nd gen VC overseas... Or even the transparent case backs on other watches.

I think everything has its allure :)

You beat me to it. Old 1665s have it too. If you go back earlier old small and big crowns were engraved ‘stainless’ - the new tudors have exhibition casebacks?!

There enough branding on Rolex watches already.

Less is more, leave the caseback alone please

It makes little sense to brand a solid caseback.

Do Rolex have the worst case backs ever?

Lol case back complaints. This forum can be funny sometimes.

I’ll admit it is cool to see the movement on an exhibition, but that is not what Rolex is all about. To say it’s not a luxury piece of jewelry would be a lie. However, Rolex manages the jewelry / utilitarian ratio very well. Their watches are intended and fully capable for sport (even if most are not used for intended purposes anymore).

Their case backs are functional as is the rest of the watch. You don’t like it, there are plenty of watches with flashy case backs that sit against your wrist and are never seen… ever… if that is your thing.

If it s my everyday watch I would definitely choose close caseback if possible. I lives in Thailand and it's soooo HOT the whole year.

After I got the Royal Oak with open caseback, it s like putting you hand on glass table and it sweating so hard. Same experience here with the sapphire case back.

BTW I really like the new caseback from Explorer 124270. It s now in all brushed surface. No more polished ring area.

I like it as-is, but (my OCD brain) wouldn't mind if the brushing straightened out parallel to the lugs.

Then again, it wouldn't match the crowns . . . .

I never pay attention to the caseback of any of my watches. I'm too busy looking at the dial when I wear them.

I tend to like it the way it is. It can also be a perfect canvas for engraving for those who prefer added details.

Doesn't seem to be working all that well w/Panerai

I kind of like the detail to the movement even though you'll never see it on the reg.

Just a hunch....but, I'm guessing, it's the back of the case.
