Recommendation for a second watch

Hi all,

Hope you’re doing great.

I have a Rolex GMT Master II and I like it very much. However, I don’t feel it can be worn at any occasion, especially if you’re going to a picnic or going out to places that put the watch under a risk of getting beaten.

From your experience, what’s a good option for a 2nd watch that is affordable, practical, daily beater, yet it still has the reputation of being a great timepiece to buy.

My answer may not be what you are looking for. However, it is what I do and my reply. I always have a Casio (currently and Illuminator - in the past they were G-Shocks). I use the Casio for outdoor yard work and exercise.

FYI, my daily wear is a vintage Tudor Submariner and dress watch is a Citizen
Eco-Drive my wife gave me.

Wear your GMT and enjoy every minute of it. It’s a watch! You’re going to ding it, scratch it, bump it, etc…. It’s made to take daily abuse. In 7-10 years send it in for a tune up and it will look like new again. Wear again for another 7-10 years and repeat the process.

TRF usually gives a lot of love to Seiko in these cases.

Wear it, your watch can take it. If you want a less expensive beater, try Tudor.

Not trying to be snide, but how would a picnic adversely impact a Rolex or any watch for that matter?

I wear my sub C for everything. Yard work, vehicle maintenance, home remodel projects, etc. There are no limits. Occasionally it gets dunked in the ocean to wash the sawdust and grease off. It’s had 9 years of abuse and while it has its fair share of shallow scratches it’s doing fine. Ceramic bezel is still perfect though.

Seems like the GMT should wear just as well.

So I felt the same way about my 16613 Bluesy. Needed something a bit more casual to fly under the radar. Imo, It depends on your price range, and which gmt master you have. If you have a preceramic, it should never look out of place and never be too under/over stated. For my second watch, I started looking into black subs and, explorer II’s. Speedmaster, tags and sea masters were also on the table. I ended up getting a no date sub for my second watch and it 100% filled the void. Second watch seems like a bigger decision than the 1st to me. Your price and when/where you will be wearing it should dictate what you get.

Best of luck!

Submariner. I wear it when working out, fishing, cleaning, swimming, etc. The Glidelock clasp is one of the best metal band designs for usage in situations where your wrist tends to swell, like if you're in the sun on a boat during a humid day trying to (usually unsuccessfully) convince fish to accept your sacrificial offering. Despite them constantly being babied, the Sub is designed to get banged really up--it can withstand a tremendous amount of shock and it has a finish that looks good even as it accumulates battle scars.

Like Kulak noted, I would think the GMT could sustain just as much punishment, as Rolexes are generally not delicate watches at all.

Please tell us more about these extreme picnics?

Another vote for a Submariner / Explorer / Omega Seamaster.

All of these watches (including your GMT) can take any beating you throw at it.

Unsure of your budget, but how about a quartz Omega Seamaster or quartz Grand Seiko? As abovementioned, an original-style Casio G-Shock (DW5600 in traditional colour) is a cool cheapy. But it does mean reduced use-value for your Rolex.

Why not just say, “screw it”, and relax into wearing your Rolex absolutely everywhere? “You can’t take it with you” later on, so go to town while you can. Apologies for the platitudes, but they hold.

Take a look at a Citizen Eco Drive titanium. Light, durable and cheap. They run on solar power. It’s what I wear whenever I don’t want to deal with a luxury watch but don’t want to wear a Gshock either. I’ve been mugged/robbed for my watch more than once when traveling and prefer not to go through that again.

Always a reason for another watch. Seiko would be my economical choice. For a second watch that is more, I would look to Omega or Tudor.

This. It's just a piece of steel, not a baby. It have no soul or feelings. It's a watch.

If it helps:

<$150 - G-Shock / Seiko / Orient
$300 - Entry level mechanical Glycine / Tissot
$1k - Oris / Ball
$3k-4k - Tudor / SMP

I wouldn't worry about the watch, unless you attend those full-contact picnics.

As noted by others, you can wear a Rolex GMT in all of those engines. Rolex is durable.

If you just want another watch for those activities ( and plenty of us like having other watches) I recommend a SubC

I specifically turn to my GMT when i want to wear something durable. I love the pictures of subs/gmts and others that look like they have lived a full life. When I worry about impact damage to the movement or sports/golf/tennis etc I usually turn to my apple watch.

Wait what, going to pick nice and getting beaten. I can assure you my sub has been to many a picnic over the past 20 years and has done fine. This is the beauty of Rolex versus say AP, PP, VC they can and will do anything and everything and they will outlive you no joke. Now if you simply want another watch, great but as my late mother said (who wore hers for 25/30 years) once you have a Rolex you don’t need another watch.

Now if you were going to play rugby I would say sure gshock or better yet seiko arnie (which I also suggest over the gshock simply for the bezel) but short of that that gmt will do fine.

Any Swatch or Time Q reissue

Maybe even a Seiko prospex line.

But it depends on the picnic, too.
