Tried on submariner.....seemed small...buy anyways or consider others?

My normal weekend wear is a Tag Grand Carrera, which is 42.5mm. I am looking to purchase my first Rolex, which I think the submariner is the best for for me. However, I was a bit bummed out today when I tried it on. I used to powerlift/bodybuild; therefore, my arms and overall body is a bit larger than most.

Is this something I need to purchase, and I will learn to adapt to? Is there another Rolex brand that I should consider?

I've got an 8 inch wrist and don't wear any watch of 40mm.

If you are having second thoughts, don't buy it. Maybe try the SDDS, it is a bit larger and might feel better. Another possibility could be the Exp2. That is also bigger than the sub.

40mm rolex' are small to me too....so I got a 42mm exp ii. Happy camper indeed. Or the 44mm deep sea.

You have me beat on size...has to be in my head then. Thanks for sharing.

I'm 7.5" wrist. If you pull off 40mm, then it must be something that I can adapt to.

Thank you both for sharing your sentiment. I tried on the GMT, but it made no difference. I didn't even think about trying the deep sea. I will try these on next weekend. Based on the others, maybe it's in my head since I have became accustomed to the 42.5. The watch is a big investment for me; therefore, a bit nervous about the purchase.

Thank you again for the input.

Agree with the other posters to try the Deespea and Explorer II.
The Yachtmaster II is a bigger Rolex.

As for other brands, a few suggestions:

Omega
- Their Planet Oceans 45mms wear big

Panerai
- They have always been big, with 44mm and larger being their norm, not recent upsizing

Audemar Piguet
- They have many 44 mm watches that wear big

Go for the Explorer II, it's a better looking watch and looks noticeably bigger at 42mm.

Exp II, YM II, DSSD fit the bill, but I am sure the Sub looked great on you!!!

It's really what style you prefer. I've always had big watches (7.5 wrist) but have started gravitating to the 40's and 41's. It started from three years with a DSSD and never feeling comfortable with how top heavy it was. After many watches as big or bigger.

Want the sub to look bigger? Try a Daytona. Same size, but wears smaller.

If you are going to spend the money for a watch, only buy what you like.

If it feels small to you, then it always will and you will regret buying it.

There are so many other larger watches out there, good respectable brands for people who are larger. I suggest you go that route. Rolex is not for everyone. That is not bad, just he way it is.

If you don't love it don't buy it!!! Look for something else you like. You might consider the DSSD as was already suggested. Also consider the EXPII, the DJII, and the Tudor Pelagos and Black Bay as larger alternatives.

Other brands to consider for larger watches:
IWC
Breitling

If this is a significant investment, take your time.
And the trusted sellers on TRF can get you anything you want, Rolex or otherwise.

Did you go to the store wearing a bigger watch. If I'm going to try on new watches I prefer to wear nothing to the store as it can throw off your perception of the size of a watch when you first take off your bigger watch the try on a smaller one. For example when taking off my 42mm ExpII to immediately put on a GMT it made the GMT feel small initially when in actuality it is perfect. Tom not too long ago posted a photo of one of his sons wearing a new Daytona. His son is a big strong guy with huge arms and it looked great on him

As part of a collection, the Submariner will always find a place. If an only watch, though, maybe look elsewhere?

Or, buy a used Sub and see if it sticks... If not, you can flip for little to no loss.

I have 8 &1/4 inch wrists. The subc with its supercase works for me.
The issue with the deep sea is its height & weight. Some love it; others feel that it's too much for a daily wearer. You may wNt to check out date just 2. 41 mm but wears larger.

Don't settle. I am 6'4 250 with 7.75" wrist and I can pull of a 36mm date just and be alright with it (though my sweet spot is 39-40). My good friend is shorter than me with sub 7" wrist and his smallest watch is a DJ2 with his normal being an omega PO. My point is get what fits your style and what you like on your wrist not what someone else says you should get.

PS. My avatar is my wrist trying on a Daytona which wears small for a 40 and looks great (in my opinion).

Explorer II 216570 is the answer! Noticeably bigger dial.
Choice of black or white too.

I do think a process of adaptation takes place when you're accustomed to one watch size and go straight to one "significantly" different. I certainly experienced this at least.

I used to wear a 42mm watch which seemed the perfect size. Now after wearing a Sub Date for the past few years, that old 42mm seems really big.

This may happen to you too, but of course there's no guarantee.

I don't think I'd buy a watch like the Sub if I didn't feel I could enjoy it without compromise.

The DSSD on the other hand, sounds like it might fit you just right!

I'd be interested to know what you end up deciding.

The Subc wears like a 41/2 mm so should be OK, maybe you should try it on a couple more timesto be sure, otherwise yes the DSSD is a good choice.

It's likely because you're accustomed to your bigger TAG. After a few days, you'd get used to it and not even notice. That said, check your options before the purchase.
