GMT master refurb

Rolex amateur here. This was my fathers 1966 vintage GMT Master. He purchased it that same year when he was hired as a pilot by Pan Am- if only this watch could speak! Obviously it has great sentimental value to me and I'd like to get it refurbished. Is it possible to get the faded dial and hand replaced by Rolex? Any idea on cost? Thanks in advance.

Sure. Rolex will replace the dial and hands....and destroy the value of the watch not only from a value standpoint, but from an heirloom position as well. Have a trusted watchmaker service it, leave the dial and hands alone and remember the good times.

That is a beautiful piece best left in its original condition. Please do not refurbish it...just service it and enjoy.

A service would be fine but keep all the original parts intact to preserve the value. If it is not modern enough for you then keep it for occasional wear and buy a modern one for everyday.

I really wouldn't .....that's a superb watch as it is, just a service would be all it needs imo.

I agree with others, keep the dial and hands, just have the crystal polished and maybe a light polish/rebrusing on the case and bracelet, it will look amazing!
You'll be suprised how good just a clear/shiny crystal will make this watch.

Looks very nice indeed - maybe a service but keeping dial, hands and insert as is. Looks like it has been fairly well looked after also.

What a fabulous piece. I'd encourage you to leave it as it as all cost.
Have the movement serviced but don't touch the dial, hands, bezel etc.

Congrats on a great watch that is multiplied in greatness by the family history. You can't put a price tag on that.

Very nice watch you have there from your father.

Looks as though the dial has already been replaced once in its life.

Should ha e a gloss gilt dial like below if from '66.

pic courtesy of HQ Milton.

Would need to know the serial number, to know for sure.

The dial in there now is a later MK 2 dial from the early 70's that looks to have been relumed.
Nice non the less.

Just have a watchmaker give it a service, and enjoy it.

Agree with other in leaving it. But if you really want to wear it and have it glow, buy a service dial and hands and have watchmaker change it and keep other parts safe.

The bezel insert has been replaced at one time, along with the dial, hands and possibly the date wheel if it is circa 1966. A serial number and case back stamping would help further evaluate the watch.

Leave it 'as-is', but service the movement and send the bracelet to Michael Young
