Terrible situation and truly heartbreaking. If there is something that can be learned from this it’s the principle of negative and positive goals when driving. You always hear stories of people crashing into a deer that is stopped on the road (why not drive around it?) or police officers standing near their cars on the side of the road being hit. It’s because people will drive towards what they’re looking at. Subconsciously you’ll aim towards what you’re staring at even though you don’t want to hit it. When you see an accident on the side of the road or a child on a bicycle close to the road - don’t stare at it and continue to drive towards a safe place (you can always stop later).

There are countless videos on YouTube of police cars with their lights on getting hit by other drivers who are fixated on the police car. It’s a good thing to train yourself and family members to look ahead at “positive” goals and avoid staring at the “negative” goals. Hopefully we can avoid or diminish the tragedies like this officer’s death in the future.

So sad! We need more stringent laws concerning first responders and police officers on the sides of our highways. Their lights can be seen well in advance to give them a lane of safety while passing. We have seen these deaths over and over again in New Jersey. Another unnecessary Death of one of our most important Heroes.

I hate hate hate seeing stories like this. I've told my wife to do what I've been doing for years. If you get pulled over on the interstate, keep driving to an exit. I refuse to pull off on the side of the road anymore. Between dry grass and the risk of being hit by another vehicle doing 70+MPH, it's just not worth it. If the gets upset that we didn't stop, I just explain that I did it for HIS/HER safety as well as ours. So sad that this happened. :(
