Would you rather have....2 Rolex or Rolex, GS, Omega
For a small collection......say three watches total, what would you choose?
Option 1: Explorer (214270) and Submariner (116610) or(114060) Option 2: Explorer, Grand Seiko snowflake, Omega Speedmaster Professional Option 3: Submariner (GS, FOIS, Something else) Ive tentatively decided option two is the one I like. It gives me different options. That said, the submariner is probably the one watch I've admired the most.....my concern is its too common. To any non-watch person, its THE Rolex, which is slightly annoying to deal with people commenting on it. I liked the Explorer for versatility and an "under the radar" type look. Its a high quality piece that can be worn on almost any occasion. A Speedy on a leather strap, and a white faced GS will provide three unique, but different looks. Well respected by enthusiasts for their history, but very different in every way. What do you think? |

Hi Chad, welcome to the forum
I’ve never really thought of collecting in that way personally I tend to think about what references I want to own and I start slowly one by one. The Submariner is a great start ... foundation to any collection |

Since you are on the forum, it's safe to assume that you will buy more and sell some. I wouldn't stress too much. Think about what you want your collection to look like. Buy what you like. Diversity is fun.
FWIW, I love my Explorer. Under the radar. Wearable in all situations. |

I just don’t love the explorer but I certainly vote, one Rolex, omega, and GS. I love the season collection GS.

depends which I like most. I would just buy the next watch I like the most, regardless of price, so if that's the EXI for you, then I would do that.
I personally would rather have an Omega and GS over one of the Rolex (personally I would have like an EXI, Planet Ocean, and GS), so I would probably lean towards option 2 or 3, but those are the watches I like best. |

I'm not a huge fan of the Explorer, so option 3 for me, with the Submariner and the Speedy.
I see your point about having a different color dial, and if I were going to change it up from the above, I would pair the Submariner with either an Omega Seamaster AT with blue dial, or a Cartier Santos white dial (the latter gives me a very different case shape as well). All of the above are very versatile with bracelets or straps (although the Santos strap options might be somewhat limited). Knowing that I probably can't have just a 2 watch collection, I would probably fill in other needs/wants with some affordable watches. |

If I were to start a collection. I would get a sub or gmt. Then go to other brands like omega. Life is too short to stick to 1 brand

Option 2.
I've owned the 214270 and the 114060, and I'm certain that I prefer the Explorer between those two. I find the Explorer's case is more comfortable to wear and more attractive to my eye than the Submariner's is. |

I think the Explorer and Sub are very similar to each other. Sub and polar Explorer 2 are different from each other. Add a GS Snowflake or Omega Speedmaster for a balanced collection.

The best thing you can do is to think about a strategy for your collection. Otherwise, like many, you'll end up with very similar popular pieces. Cute, but not interesting.
Out of your options, #2 looks solid.

I used to be all about Rolex. I wanted all the hot models. But now I’m rethinking my approach and am wanting more diversity. I am about to have a milestone moment and am getting a Cartier Santos blue dial. I inquired about a Pepsi, and it seems promising that I can get one soon at MSRP, but I’m going to pass. I already have an Explorer II, Batman and Hulk, so a change is needed. A GS spring drive is on the radar in the future too.

I vote sub and speedy.
The sub is the very common but I don’t think you will encounter annoying comments like you fear. |

Personally i will prefer option 2 as it is more towards a balanced collection with some variety where you can appreciate each different brand. Having a collection with full rolexes does retained much of its value but missed out the fun of the hobby.

It is fun to strategize but I would not overthink it. Get the piece you like most first and take it from there. Seems to be the Explorer for you.

None of the above!
I would get a Sub and a GMT!

Option 2: But I'd swap the Speedmaster for an SMP300. Nat a fan of the current sub at all.

For me, I'd go Submariner, Explorer (or Omega Speedmaster Prof) and then a new Cartier Santos. GS is fine, I've tried them on, and they do nothing for me. The Sub is a classic dive watch, and it is so rugged it can survive anything. It is the diving watch by which all others are measured.
The Explorer is a nice, and as you said it flies under the radar. My only issue was I liked it, bought one and never wore it. I always chose one of my other watches. I think the Explorer looks great, and I love seeing them in photos or on people, but it was never my go to watch for some reason. The Speedmaster gives you a chronograph and is a completely different look than a Rolex. The Santos is a tremendous value in terms of price, relative to its standard features, and its a very versatile watch that allows one to quickly switch between a bracelet and strap with no tools. While not a true dress watch, it's the dressiest of the 3. As for the Sub being common, so what. Much of that is because it is a great watch that has proven itself for decades. If I'm wearing my Sub and I see another guy wearlng a Sub, I think to myself, "Damn, that guy has good taste!" ;) |

The choice between the Sub and Explorer II is strictly personal and the Speedy is a classic chronograph.
I have both a GS (SBGA387) and picked up a Santos (ADLC) recently. Both are fantastic watches but serve slightly different functions for me. I wear the GS in casual situations where I want something lighter and more comfortable than a Rolex sports watch, or want to fly under the radar while still wearing something special. The build quality and finish is second to none (though Rolex bracelets are nicer). The Santos is a great daily wearer that can fit in with most occasions as mentioned above. It has a fun history and I like the square case for a change of pace (it's curved, too, so unless you have a really flat wrist, it is extremely comfortable, too). I have a dress watch but if I was limiting myself to 3 (including the two above), I would keep the Santos over the GS because of its flexibility. |

If the Submariner is what you want, then get it. otherwise, it will always be the one that you don't have. maybe consider something vintage, or something that's a little more special.
and the other two can be GS snow flake, or a springdrive GMT, a chronograph of your choice. its up to you.

One watch at a time for me. Love the Explorer and the Sun, although the Exp is more versatile. Not a fan of the Speedmaster, but the GS is intriguing, an under appreciated high quality timepiece; it’s growing on me. Those who mentioned the Santos, I hear ya!!

Option 2.
If I had to trim my collection to 2, it would be the 14060M and the 16570 polar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I like to have a general idea of what my end-game is, but maybe I shouldn't nail down exact references I want so early in the process. |

Me personally:
As much as I love GS and think that they truly do exceed Rolex quality in most ways, none of their pieces speak to me that much design-wise, aside from some of the very high end ones that I can't afford. I own a Speedy Pro but no other Omegas appeal to me much either. Whereas I can think of 4-5 Rolexes I'd really like to own besides the one I have. For you: Having the 1 you really want is better than having 3 you want less (IMO) |
