New SS Kings? SS GMTs?

Yes the Daytona sells for double retail but they are next to impossible to get as they don’t produce enough of them.

The submariner line has long ruled the SS Sports watches. That was the go to first Rolex for many buyers. Now with social media and Instagram has the GMT now replaces the submariner as the most sought after first Rolex? What do you prefer? The GMT or the Submariner?

Jubilee Batman all the way, it is distinct and has a specific complication (2nd time zone). Sub is iconic but visually very similar to the Sea Dweller and Deepsea. The fact that the waiting list has shifted beyond 10 years for practically all the professional lineup will shift the demand to the classic lineup.

The Submariner is an icon, the GMT is not.

GMT is my option just because of the additional time zone feature.

I’ve always preferred GMT complication. GMT has also received more love from Rolex last few years hence more buzz. All that might change 1st of Sept.

GMT for me - but love the old school GMT'S more. Sub is fantastic but the dual time is convenient.

Daytona is the SS king

GMTs become popular in recent years, but the sub has been the king for decades

I own a sub, and agree the sub is an icon. Help me understand how the gmt is not an icon?

I would argue the Daytona is most sought after. While it can be argued both are over hyped, the Daytona broke no new ground and has no real heritage however.

I respectfully disagree.

I feel the heritage of the Daytona seems to be on par or greater than other models. Rolex has been the official timekeeper if the Daytona races since the 60s I believe.

For one piece of modern new ground, the 4130 is the first movement with the Parachrom hairspring that is now standard in most models. The movement is also a marvel of engineering in modern watchmaking (imho). 201 components, with only 12 screws. Vertical clutch. I think it was the first rolex movement with 72 power reserve as well.

I think for most the DJ is their first aspirational Rolex purchase.

For me personally, I started with a diver. It’s the first Rolex I fell in love with and I’ll always have a Submariner in my modest collection. The GMT is my favourite Rolex to wear at the moment but whenever I put on the Sub it makes me smile.

That sounds like a Rolex commercial. The official timekeeper? They were not actually using a Daytona to time the race you get that right? Unlike the el primero (first auto chrono) navitimer used for real flight calculations, and speedy pro used in space. That’s heritage my friend. Yes the Daytona movement is a great one, but there are other great chrono movements out there as well. For the so called marvel of engineering it’s antimagnetic qualities are far behind omega’s watches. Take it from a guy who magnetized my Daytona and sub reaching into the refrigerator to grab some milk. Let’s be objective here. The Daytona is pretty to look at, desired yes, but it’s not what people make it out to be. I owned 2 for what it’s worth.

I prefer the SS GMT over the SS Sub. I like the slight variations in the line do to the bezel changes.

I love subs and GMT and struggle to pick between them.
If it really came to just one, I’d go GMT
