Ben the difference is there but it's subtle most people would look at a platinum watch and automatically think it's steel - for me that's the appeal.

I think platinum looks 'brighter' than steel.

It's definitely a difference you can tell when looking at them side by side, but not in a vacuum.

I've taken the opposite approach from you, and have a hard time paying the premium for platinum when it looks just like steel and scratches like crazy. However, the blue dial is much nicer than the white, and that's why, like you, I opted for the platinum 44mm.

Including the brushed surfaces? I know for polished surfaces, Platinum stands out even more than gold. Most of the ROO case is actually brushed except the edges.

Agree on the blue dial on the PT44. Looks great. Too bad I can never wear it. The weight is over powering.

The metal still has a brighter look than steel

I think it's something you get used to. It's not significantly heavier than the gold. I bet if you wore it every day for a week, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Interesting the skew to the RB2 but I guess not a surprise. I genuinely don't have a favourite.

They are all nice Roger and owning just one will be a great joy, not to mentioned all three, but if compelled to choose, probably the Montoya, then the RB2 and last the GP. However, if the GP is fitted with a ceramic bezel, it will jump to one. Anyway, all three are not as nice as the Schumi Pt.

Thanks Ben. The GP is in for service and I am debating the ceramic bezel. It doesn't need it as the Carbon is in fine shape but I worry about the clash of the ceramic with the carbon pusher surrounds and also the other carbon elements. I wonder whether swapping it would make the watch look a little frankenwatch? Also it of course renders the watch non-standard which might affect resale later on down the line. Not a major consideration to be honest but the first issue is more concerning.

I love the carbon. It has a uniqueness and depth that ceramic lacks. When I had a gp I resisted any urge to swap out. Plus, it's in keeping with the ethos of the watch as an homage to race cars.

If the bezel is good keep it as is. I have seen a few with the ceramic vented bezel and it just looks a little off. And of course you will never get the money back when you resell.

I have seen many GP with deteriorated FC bezel, which might explain why APSC is willing to swap it out for a ceramic bezel. I don't think resale is a concern and I think the ceramic bezel will actually improve it. Anyway, if your bezel is still in good condition, perhaps you can keep it like that for a while. Actually, if the whole case can be ceramic, it will be such a killer of a watch.

Swapping the case from platinum to ceramic would be total madness and they would never do it even if I asked! I know the weight of pt is too much for you but I love it!

Borrowed from a for sale ad here awhile back. Not sure if it ever sold but price was dropped quite a bit from the initial listing.

Thanks. Yes I have seen photos and both the rg and Carbon versions with the ceramic bezel but not the platinum. I am in two minds. Watch is in for service now so I need to make an immediate decision.

Out of interest Roger is it possible to have a new FC bezel fitted?

Yes and it is a bit cheaper, than the ceramic, but not necessary as the current one is in pretty excellent shape.

Thanks, I wasn't suggesting that you needed one.
I'm interested in buying the entry level GP most of which have bezels that appear to have done two tours in Afghanistan.

Yes, they do not wear well on many of the ones I have seen. Replacing the carbon here in HK is almost as expensive as changing to ceramic. I seem to recall someone on here claimed that changing the carbon for a new carbon one was only USD500 at Clearwater. If so, that is approximately a quarter of the price I have been quoted here. Worth checking with AP directly in Blighty.

I did Roger. The carbon on the carbon GP can be replaced for $500 but the carbon bezel for the gold GP is $1200 and $2200 for the PT GP as I was told the PM GP's have PM bits underneath the bezel that also had to be replaced. This was told to me by Guillaume the service center manager at Clearwater.

Thanks for the information Saral - if there are platinum bits underneath the bezel, they are certainly not visible from the outside, but that is indeed the price I was quoted. I wonder then whether they would charge more for the ceramic one on a precious metal version for the same reason vs fitting it on the carbon edition??

The way it was explained to me that fittings on all PM watches are more than on non PM models.

You are right. I was thinking the fc case, otherwise it's just too many materials.

+1. Anytime I see a GP with a ceramic bezel it looks off (I'll say that instead of like crap). AP designed it right from the beginning. The carbon pushers are the difference maker in why the carbon bezel just looks right. I rather pay 500 bucks every 2-3 years than switch to the ceramic bezel.
