Definitely can be an only watch, quite versatile. I believe someone (maybe Gus?) had a photo of one that was worn non stop for decades. It's was certainly beaten up, but handled the job...

I've been debating this as well for my YM.
Just like you, I am a one watch guy, a rare breed. If it helps I've come to this conclusion, I'm set on getting the 5711 and later on, if needed, especially on those long waits for service, get a no date sub. But from what I've read, 5711 is fully capable of this, I've been told it's no issue for my active lifestyle (swimming, gym, travel, outdoors and business). Go for it and enjoy it!

Thanks all-still contemplating this. I think I'll keep my 116619 and add the 5711. Just awaiting the right opportunity.

I would need a second watch...or maybe 10 or so.

Absolutely capable as an only watch. Frankly, considering the watch shows this year, my interest in the watch "game" has diminished drastically. So with nothing on my radar at the moment I'm rediscovering all the things I like about my 5711!

I've enjoyed the same models (5167/1a, 5164a, 5980/1a, 5980/1r, 5712r) and the 5711/1a is still one of my favorites. Pairs very well with a 116619LB (my beater).

If you can add that's ideal, otherwise I'd probably get a SS Subc and the 5711, hate to have that bezel get all marked up and gnarly.

Or buy a 5167 as an everyday watch and 5711 as a your dressy watch.

Nope.
I have one and it's fantastic in every way except for its ever increasing value. Scratch it, which isn't hard if you where it every day, it's gonna cost you. You need something else for sure |
